Additionally, the angelic figures carrying torpedoes suspended from the ceiling speaks to an era when freedom of speech was restricted, while advocating for the importance of liberty toward the future. indieguerillas @indieguerillas , an artist duo also from Indonesia like Heri Dono, presents their first collaborative work with him. Combining motifs of traditional Javanese leather puppet theater and cartoons, their work encourages contemplation about the beauty of diversity and human prosperity. This work, marking the artist's third exhibition at Benesse Art Site Naoshima, has been recreated to fit the museum building and is displayed in its largest size to date. Martha Atienza @martha.atienza presents a video work based on her research of Bantayan Island in the Philippines, where she is based. Drawing on the island's history of being influenced by the tourism industry in the name of economic development, she conveys the island's culture through video. With one above-ground and two basement floors, Naoshima New Museum of Art features a large roof that gracefully harmonizes with the ridge of the hills. Bathed in natural light from a skylight, the staircase forms a single line connecting the ground level to the basements, with four galleries on either side. A café adjoins the north side of the ground floor, offering a terrace overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and from which visitors can enjoy scenic views so quintessential to the region, including the island of Teshima and passing fishing boats. As the first built in the village of Naoshima, the museum’s exterior is designed to blend in with the local landscape, with such distinctive features as black plaster outside walls to match the traditional burned-cedar method still used on the island as well as pebble walls inspired by the houses of the Honmura area.
