After a long, harsh winter, the warmth of spring is now gently approaching the island💐 Starting this March, visits to the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum will be conducted through scheduled guided tours. Going beyond the museum itself, these tours invite guests to explore the history and culture of Inujima, offering a deeper and more immersive experience👍 *the tour will be operated in Japanese. English speakers will be provided the pamphlets to support. In 2017, they created "Michi" (street) at Kitakore Building in Koenji—a space accessible to anyone, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year🚶♂️... At Naoshima New Museum of Art, anticipating the eventual demolition of the building, the museum serves as a space for the project's process by exhibiting the "in-transit" state of "Michi" for its relocation. Martha Atienza @martha.atienza presents a video work based on her research of Bantayan Island in the Philippines, where she is based. Drawing on the island's history of being influenced by the tourism industry in the name of economic development, she conveys the island's culture through video. With one above-ground and two basement floors, Naoshima New Museum of Art features a large roof that gracefully harmonizes with the ridge of the hills. Bathed in natural light from a skylight, the staircase forms a single line connecting the ground level to the basements, with four galleries on either side. A café adjoins the north side of the ground floor, offering a terrace overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and from which visitors can enjoy scenic views so quintessential to the region, including the island of Teshima and passing fishing boats. As the first built in the village of Naoshima, the museum’s exterior is designed to blend in with the local landscape, with such distinctive features as black plaster outside walls to match the traditional burned-cedar method still used on the island as well as pebble walls inspired by the houses of the Honmura area. On view are architectural models, video works, and original drawings that offer insight into her unique vision. Ahead of the Osaka event, a private preview was held on Inujima, where Sejima’s firm unveiled the permanent Pavilion at the Inujima Life Garden. Donated by Prada to the Fukutake Foundation, this permanent structure will remain open to the public on the island. We are sincerely grateful for this generous contribution.
