The 1st and 3rd images were taken with the 50mm f/1.4 (1st version). The 2nd and 4th images were taken with the Q2. The Q2 is almost perfect. Aberrations and flare are beautifully controlled, delivering a clean, consistent, modern rendering. I shot my family with the Q2. My children were photographed with the 50mm f/1.4 (1st version). Both were shot wide open. On the other hand, the 1959 50mm f/1.4 (1st version) is a completely different lens. Wide open—especially in backlight—it’s unpredictable and quite challenging. But that instability is exactly where its charm lies. I embraced those imperfections, letting a soft rainbow flare drift into the frame. The contrast held better than I expected. That’s the beauty of vintage lenses—each one has its own character, shaped by time and individual variation. This particular lens is quite rare, and optically strong. Stop it down slightly, and it becomes sharp with beautiful resolution. It’s one of my favorite lenses. Still, their charm—the way they move, their expressions—hasn’t changed. They were just as adorable. I probably won’t make it this year, but next year, I want to come back again. Mounted on a Leica SL2, I did a test shoot with Ryouya. Made in the early 1950s with an L39 mount, this lens is pure character. The rear element looks like a ping-pong ball. Wide open, it’s extremely soft — glow, flare, and melting highlights. Focus is loose by modern standards, and the bokeh is wild and unpredictable. Stopped down, it becomes sharp, but the color still carries a distinct Showa-era feel. Even without retouching, it naturally renders a retro look. This isn’t about sharpness — it’s about atmosphere. I waited for a while, watching the light and waiting for the moment when people would clear out. It’s a really good shooting spot. Then a group of moms with their dogs noticed that I had a camera and gathered around me. They had expensive Canon R-series cameras to photograph their beloved dogs, but they were struggling because they didn’t have the technique yet. So I ended up starting an impromptu free photography lesson from Five Star Camera. Apparently they wanted to learn how to shoot backlit photos. After that, I used my SONY α9 III and Profoto flash to control the light and photographed their dogs for them. It was a situation they simply couldn’t capture themselves. And I understand how dog and cat owners feel. Originally I was there to shoot sample photos with three Fujifilm cameras, but I only had wide-angle lenses, and tourists kept walking into the frame, so it was difficult to shoot. In the end, my own Sony setup saved the day. The weather will be bad this week, so it was probably the last good day to shoot. I was lucky I went.
