スイスで生まれ育ったのちにアメリカへと移住し、「アメリカを撮る」というテーマでグッゲンハイム奨学金を授与されたフランクは、1955年から56年までの約9ヶ月間にわたってアメリカ全土を車で巡り、一人の移民として客観的にアメリカ人の実態を捉えた本作を成果物として生み出しました。しかしこの撮影が実施された1950年代末はアメリカが第二次世界大戦で勝利し、のちに「黄金の50年代」と呼ばれるほどに経済的にも物質的にも豊かになった一方で、人種差別のほか景気の停滞、そして貧富の差などこれまで目を伏せてきた問題が多数浮かび上がってきた時期であったために、これらの問題を嘘偽りなく赤裸々に突き付ける本作はアメリカ国民にとって受け入れ難く、1958年にアメリカで発売された際には大きな非難を受けたのでした。 しかし、現在では約28000枚という膨大な写真群から自ら厳選した83枚のみで対比や連続性を意識しながら緻密に構成されている点や、当時としては画期的な個人の心境や感情を写真に移入している点などから、様々な出版社より再販され、現在では写真集における金字塔として高い評価を得ています。 約200年前のディキンソンの努力に敬意を表し、庭で66本の植物を育て、ビクトリア朝時代の写真製法で66ページの植物標本を再現。 植物や花の色とりどりの汁を紙に塗り、その紙（写真のネガを乗せたもの）を太陽に当てることで作成するアンソタイプ（植物写真）を用いています。 植物に見られる純粋で非合成的な色彩と、芸術や文学における花の象徴性について考察した一冊。
