Anyway, Japanese mainly use Kanji and Japanese letters including Hiragana and Katakana (ひらがな and カタカナ). Kanji can be written in ひらがな, for example, あいうえお, which have each meaning. Therefore by knowing the meaning of Japanese letters, you will deeply get the meaning of Kanji.
