1991年9月デビュー。オリジナリティ溢れる楽曲と独特な存在感により人気を得て、 1992年の2ndアルバムでは日本レコード大賞ポップ、ロック部門のアルバム・ニューアーティスト賞を受賞。1996年には女優として出演した岩井俊二監督の映画「スワロウテイル」が公開、劇中のバンドYEN TOWN BANDのボーカルとして参加して制作された「Swallowtail Butterfly～あいのうた」が大ヒットとなる。この頃からライフスタイルをも含めた新しい女性像としての人気も獲得し、 1997年のアルバム「Junior Sweet」は100万枚を超えるセールスを記録。以降「CHARAのような」と他の女性アーティストを形容するような個性を完全に確立する。音楽的探求を以後も各アルバムでなし続け、若手、新鋭とのコラボレーションも数多い。
