However I felt that he had a thorough knowledge of the "grammar" of contemporary art. Also, he boldly incorporated new technology, but without it being the main object. I felt that he was able to realize what he wanted to do and show his concept using technology in his artwork up to a point but without going over. High on the media agenda at the time I found the stories, the opinions, the ‘debate’ surprising, interesting and shocking. ㅤ The theme of the work is the definition of minority. When I saw what was happening in the world, in particular the US I felt there had to be an installation in LA. ㅤ I wanted the element of distortion, which can be treated as both positive and negative, in LA, the last city for screening. ㅤ I chose venues from a Quentin Tarantino film because his films, which represent Hollywood, show Asian cultures from a Western perspective. In 2018, every time we had dinner, Anno san asked me to help as the marketing strategist of Shin Evangelion. I'm responsible for the marketing, advertising and publicity strategy, as well as the execution of the advertising. I would like to start by stating that I am collaborating with the people at khara, inc. who have been supporting Evangelion thus far. Additionally, for this project, Anno san and I established a new corporation "YamAnno Inc.” as joint CEOs. YamAnno is of course, “Yaman+Anno”. This is the first time in my life that I have been involved in animation (and indirectly tokusatsu: Japanese special effects films and tv). Anno san and I have had many conversations over the past two years. There was a time when we were having dinner together on a weekly basis. Although only through the filter of Anno san and Evangelion, I was confident that this was sufficient to simulate my experience of 46 years of Japanese anime, tokusatsu and films. In order to fulfil all of my responsibilities on Shin Evangelion I spent time earnestly taking in these perspectives, techniques, and elements that Anno san embedded in Evangelion. I even feel a sense of relief that I have recovered something important that I hadn’t been able to experience in my whole life until now. These two years that I have been involved with Evangelion coincided with a turning point in my own life, had a profound effect on me and were my salvation: the start of my career as a contemporary artist. The Japanese title is from a Waka, a Japanese poem. Actually, even if you can read Japanese, you won’t understand the meaning of the Japanese title. This Waka from the 10th century is a love letter to a woman living far away. The letter includes a joke as a greeting to scare her playfully, "I heard there is Oni in your area. Is everything okay?”. The joke hidden in the love letter was distorted, and ingrained as Oni folklore in that area. After that it was sublimated to traditional Japanese art forms such as Noh and Kabuki and into the Anime works used in this exhibit. The distortions having even acquired the status of traditional art forms are so ingrained that people of today do not even question that they had been distorted. The title, the waka, is the second symbol of distorted definition after Oni. The story of "Kurozuka/Adachi-ga-hara" is brilliant. In fact, ranging from Noh and Kabuki to Anime, what we feel from this performance title is not fear but the struggle and sorrow of Oni. There may even be some existence of the truth in these distortions. To show that, I made a projection of the Anime "Adachi-ga-hara" in this exhibit, and will trace the storyline of Noh and Kabuki "Kurozuka" in the film work, using the waka which was the origin of all of them for the title of this work. Even in the fashion industry, which Yaman has been part of, the original is always distorted with the progression of information sharing by the media and others. On the surface the components here are seemingly unrelated but are being sublimated and about to be offered up through this work of art by the artist, Yaman. It seems that Yaman himself is Oni, earnestly bearing the hefty rock. He can see himself shouldering the rock from various objective views so he knows that it is actually not a real rock. Witnessing this artwork, I felt I was made to become part of the distortion, and I realized that Yaman understood what was fated, and decided to reflect even himself in his artwork despite the risks. Oni is a metaphor for two contradictory roles: the epidemic itself and what kills it. Regarding what kills it, in the ritual, Oni is enshrined and prayed to in the hope of COVID-19 convergence. The physical exhibit and the three screenings rebuild both of the ingrained distorted roles of Oni. All of the places rebuild the ritual. I used Shibuya Crossing, known as the most heavily trafficked intersection in the world. ㅤ This crossing is said to be used by 500,000 people a day at its peak. Light and water are incorporated into the majesty of this building. I took off my shoes, excited to see what was going to happen, when I saw a pair of sneakers and thought there must be another guest. ㅤ Only the raised part of the floor of Hiunkaku had natural light coming in through the shoji screens. The rest was dark, and there was "Oni" in the center. ㅤ I was overwhelmed by its power. I felt the gamut of human emotions from Oni shouldering a large rock. Depending on the light and position Oni is viewed from, these emotions subtly transform. ㅤ The objects, (Oni, rock, vase) in front of me were real, but also imitation. What is the concept? Are both true? ㅤ No matter the answer, I had the feeling that today there is impressive work and intention spinning eternally on the spinning wheel. ㅤ I enjoyed the light, atmosphere and history with my own eyes and all my senses. It reaffirmed how actual experience is important and wonderful. Upon leaving, I saw a pair of sneakers at the entrance with the word "Fake" printed on them. When I crossed the bridge and looked back from the moon-viewing platform, I saw the structure standing proudly and solemnly as if nothing had happened, as if it were a dream. ㅤ I wish for happiness and for Oni to rid us of evil. Information transmission is the process of distortion. ㅤ So the concept of minority, and how we now tag specific minorities is the focus of the work. ㅤ In ancient Japanese mythology Oni ranged between good and evil, and was then distorted over time, into just an evil figure. ㅤ I found Oni interesting as an analogy for distorted definitions of minorities. Many of us only know its distorted definitions. ㅤ Another reason I used Oni in my global presentation was that the Greek “Daemon” suffered a similar perception in the same era. ㅤ Oni is a consistent loser, the eternal minority, the ultimate other. ㅤ Therefore, Oni cannot be specified. It can be said that what cannot be specified is the concept, Oni. ㅤ In the social media era, we see our distorted selves reflected in the mirror.
