本作品は、甲斐の武田信玄と越後の上杉謙信が対峙した川中島合戦の世界を下敷きにした、慶応2年1月中村座上演歌舞伎『川中島勝利山本』（かわなかじましょうりのやまもと）を宣伝するものです。女形の名優である「三代澤村田之助」が「武田勝頼」演じ、美男の、しかも年輩の「四代中村芝翫」がその許嫁である「八重垣姫」を演じているのは、役柄が逆ではないかと思われるかもしれません。実際、文久元年9月市村座上演『本朝廿四孝』では、芝翫が勝頼、田之助が八重垣姫を演じています。研究熱心な田之助は、以前演じた相手の芝居を見て覚えてしまい、しかもその相手役を演じたがる傾向があったようです。付き合わされた芝翫は大変だったと思われますが、それを納得させるだけの熱意と力量が田之助にはあったのでしょう。 作品は有名な「狐火」の場面を描いています。謙信が勝頼に追っ手を差し向けたことを知った八重垣姫が、諏訪法性の兜に祈り、明神の使いの狐に守られて勝頼のもとへ急ぐという場面です。危険を知らせるために、白狐の霊力を借りて諏訪湖を飛翔して湖水を渡るという仕掛けは大変幻想的です。八重垣姫の着物には狐火が描かれ、左手は狐手となっています。 江戸時代流行した「十六むさし」の盤面をデザインした背景に、「○○さし」という地口を重ねて美人の仕草を描いたシリーズ。本作品はその中でも、最も迫力のある年増女を写しています。アイヌの民族衣装の厚司（あつし）を着ているのは、ここでは異国情緒ではなく、海の女（漁業関係者）を表しています。前髪を毛羽立て、馬の尻尾に後髪を結び、横櫛、そして眉を落としたお歯黒姿は、弁慶格子の着物と合わせると、女頭目の貫禄を匂わせています。歌舞伎ならば、女形が演じる典型的悪婆スタイルです。 役者菖蒲揃のうちの1枚。「鮫ざや四郎三」は、嘉永５年７月・河原崎座初演『児雷也豪傑譚話』（じらいやごうけつものがたり）に登場する遊侠の士で、実はその正体は児雷也の仮の姿であるという役柄です。歌舞伎においては、八代市川團十郎が演じ大当たりをとった役ですが、本作品では初代河原崎権十郎（後の九代市川團十郎）見立てで描いています。菖蒲の花を背景に人気役者の立ち姿を揃い踏みさせた作品です。 浴衣の模様は、権十郎の替紋「菱（角）宝結び」です。花に関連する浮世絵を採り上げているので、菖蒲の花を紹介しました。ちなみに、鮫鞘（さめざや）とは、鮫皮の素材を鞘の表面に生かした装飾性の高い鞘で、江戸時代に流行しましたが、かなり贅沢な拵です。浮世絵解説では絵師「豊原国周」と紹介されることが多いのですが、この時点ではまだ豊原の名は使用していません。 三十六歌仙の和歌を歌舞伎の役に見立てたシリーズです。本作品は、「藤原元真」の歌を三代瀬川菊之丞演じる「墨染桜ノ霊」に擬えています。歌舞伎舞踊に『積恋雪関扉』（つもるこいせきのと）、通称「関の戸」（せきのと）という作品があって、天下を狙う謀反人である関の番人・関兵衛（実は大伴黒主）が雪の中に満開に咲く墨染桜を切ろうと鉞（まさかり）を持って近づくと、墨染桜の精が傾城墨染と名乗って現れ、しかも関兵衛が恋人の敵と知って、両者は相戦うこととなるという筋立てです。 卯の花を垣根に残る雪とみる元真の歌を、雪の中で満開に咲く墨染桜の桜吹雪を雪と見る舞踊「関の戸」に当てたということです。菊之丞が墨染桜を演じたのが、明和4年11月（1784）江戸桐座ということなので、本作品制作の68年前のことになります。墨染桜が菊之丞の当たり役であった証ですが、浮世絵によって女形の名優の顔が時代を超えて伝わっていく事実を垣間見ているということでもあります。 なお、「墨染桜ノ霊」の着物の下側が脱色したように見えるのは、木の精であるという表現のためです。また同シリーズには、紀貫之の和歌を引用した、関守姿の関兵衛の作品があります。 歌の名手「三十六歌仙」を名花「三十六花撰」に変えて、その花を歌舞伎役者に見立てたシリーズです。本作品では、「つぼすみれ」を「児雷也」に見立てています。児雷也は、当時の人気合巻『児雷也豪傑譚』に登場する、蝦蟇の妖術を駆使する義賊です。歌舞伎化されて、嘉永５年７月・河原崎座初演『児雷也豪傑譚語』（じらいやごうけつものがたり）では、八代市川團十郎が児雷也を演じて大当りをとり、團十郎の当たり役の1つとなった程です。本作品は、その團十郎がモデルです。 作品表題の下に描かれるのがつぼすみれで、児雷也が持つ小判が溢れる壺に掛けてあります。なお、つぼすみれは「坪＝庭」に生えるすみれの総称で、春先になるとわが庭にも白い花弁に紫の筋の入った小さな花を付けています。強い紫色ではありません。本作品は、「坪」と「壺」という語感に訴える作品です。静かな花つぼすみれと豪胆な児雷也の対比はなかなかの発想です。 NHK朝ドラの『らんまん』の主人公牧野富太郎『牧野 新日本植物図鑑』には、花の形が墨壺（すみつぼ）に似ているからつけられたのではないかとあり、図版も掲載されています。『らんまん』は、木版画から石版画への移行を写す歴史ドラマとして大変興味を持ちました。 本作品は、『崇禅寺馬場の仇討』（そうぜんじばばのあだうち）と呼ばれる事件を描くもので、浄瑠璃や歌舞伎にも扱われています。「瀬川如皐記」の詞書を参照すると、正徳5年（1715）11月5日、摂津国崇禅寺の門前で、「遠城治左エ門」および「遠藤喜八郎」の兄弟が、末弟である宗左衛門の敵である生田伝八（郎）を討とうとしたところ、剣術指南であった伝八の門弟達に矢を射かけられ、その助太刀によって無惨な返り討ちにあったということです。 人の命を奪う人物を描くことが多い本シリーズでは珍しく、奪われる立場の人物を写しています。詞書には、敵の伝八の悪行が世間に露顕し、切腹と相成ったとあります。本作品中の石仏が見ていたということでしょうか。なお、兄「遠藤治左エ門」については、同シリーズ中に芳幾の別作品があります。 山々亭有人記」にもあるように、「白井権八」は、江戸時代初期の鳥取藩の武士平井権八をモデルとし、人形浄瑠璃・歌舞伎『浮世柄比翼稲妻』（うきよづかひよくのいなづま）に脚色された人物で、三浦屋小紫を巡る不破伴左衛門との恋の「鞘当」（さやあて）が有名です。 本作品は、また別の場面「鈴ヶ森」で、叔父殺しの権八を捕らえて褒美を貰おうとする雲助を、名刀村正によって切り倒す様を描くものです。暗闇の中で起こっている立ち回りなのですが、焚火の光に照らされた舞台演出さながらの表現です。権八の着物の両肩に「丸に井の字」があって、これによって雲助に白井権八と露顕した次第なのです。 この後、侠客幡随院長兵衛との出会いがあり、「お若ぇのお待ちなせぇ」と呼び止められたのに対して、権八が「雉も鳴かずば打たれまいに」と警告のセリフを発します。そのセリフを受けて、松尾芭蕉の雉の俳句が冒頭に選ばれているという訳です。まさに衆「句」であり、衆「苦」の語感にも通じるのです。 「河竹其水記」とある背後の詞書によれば、医術よりも奸計で世を渡る藪医者長菴は、貧に詰まって娘を吉原に売った妹婿を、その帰り道に待ち伏せし、菅笠の上から斬り殺します。しかも、その罪を浪人藤掛道十郎になすりつけて獄死させるなど、まざまな悪事を重ねるのですが、ついに召し捕られ、名奉行大館左馬之助（大岡越前守）の裁きで服罪することになります。 本作品は、雷鳴轟く中での、この赤羽根橋での殺害事件を直裁に描くもので、2匹の野犬（山犬）が吠える様子は悪に徹した人物を一段と強調するものです。歌舞伎でこの役を務めた、4代市川小団次の悪人像が核心にあるように感じられます。 瀬川如皐記とある詞書には「籠釣瓶（かごつるべ）百人切」とあり、江戸中期に「吉原百人斬り」と言われた事件を起こし、処刑された実在の人物「佐野治郎左ェ門」を描く作品です。江戸時代の実録では、吉原の花魁八ツ橋を見染め、吉原通いを始めた田舎出の豪農治郎左ェ門を、八ツ橋が悪漢権八と共謀して散々金を使わせたうえ、さらに恥辱を与えるという筋です。恋の駆け引きとは全く無縁な田舎者が虚実をとり違えて、怒りを爆発させ、名刀「籠釣瓶」（村正）によって八ツ橋のみならず、多くの関係者を斬り殺すという悲劇を結末としています。 明治21年の『籠釣瓶花街酔醒』（かごつるべさとのえいざめ）では、手にした刀を燭台の灯に照らし、「籠釣瓶は、よく斬れるなあ…」という科白が有名ですが、本作品は左に見切れる足の人物（八ツ橋？）に一太刀浴びせようという凄惨な瞬間を描くものです。足下の首（権八？）の他、障子の影にも人がおり、また俳句にも掛けたのか、抵抗した手形がついているなど生々しい表現です。 本作品の画題の人物お松は、はじめ深川の遊女であり、後に仙台藩士に嫁ぎ、その夫が夏目四郎三郎に殺されると、夫の敵を討つ旅に出、その途中で、強請（ゆすり）や強盗を重ね、女白浪（盗賊）に身を落とします。ある満月の夜、笠松峠で夫の敵を討つ機会を得、名刀鬼神丸によって敵討ちを終えた後の場面を描くのが本作品です。お松は袖を口に咥え、刀の血を拭っています。 本懐を遂げたお松は、その後も20人を超える盗賊に囲まれるも巧みに盗賊頭を倒し頭目に収まり、手下を率いて近隣の村々を略奪し、「鬼神於松」と恐れられようになります。善悪は別として、力強く生きる女性（悪婆の典型）であり、幕末から明治維新に至る、世情の血なまぐさい雰囲気を受けた描写です。作品上部に、「松阿弥交来記」とあって、武田交来が事件の概要を記しています。 九紋竜と言えば、『三国志演義』ではなく、『水滸伝』に登場する「九紋竜史進」という人物が有名です。108人の豪傑の内で最初に登場し、白い肌に全身の倶梨伽羅紋紋、あわせて9匹の青龍が彫ってあるという美青年です。おそらく、それをモデルに「九紋竜の新吉」として、四代中村芝翫に演じさせています。 本作品では、刺青は隠され、白い肌に龍神の模様の入った浴衣を着させるという趣向で、史進の白い肌の方を選んだのでしょうか。そっちかいという気もします。首には胸守りの鎖を下げ、右手には大きな煙管を持って見得を切っています。
