万亭應賀記 観音菩薩が童（稚児）の姿で現れて庶民に慈悲を下されるという逸話は少なくありません。本件は娘の病を直してくれた紀州粉河寺（こかわでら）の童が、実は千手千眼観音の化身であったという観音霊験譚を紹介するものです。 上段の中央辺りに「千手堂」、「礼堂」、「金堂」が描かれていますが、その背後にある一段高い場所に「丹生」の社が所在することから想像すると、水神である「丹生津比賣命」の厄除けの効能を千手千眼観音が習合した可能性があります。病気の治った娘が実は丹生津比賣命であったことを暗示させるような霊験譚です。粉河寺の脇には、名前の由来となった「粉をまぶしたように白い川」がかつて流れており、もとより霊場であったところに千手千眼観音が降臨したという訳です。 紀三井寺には、霊水の溢れる3つの井があって、それが名前の由来になっています。本作品上段には、右側に「楊柳水（ようりゅうすい）」、左側に「清浄水（しょうじょうすい）」、中央に「十一面観音」そして境内の「七本櫻」がそれぞれ描かれています。これに、「吉祥水（きっしょうすい）」が加わって、3つの井となります。 下段には、清浄水の滝の内に隠れていた「龍女」が「威光上人」に法螺貝や横道木桜等の宝物を献じる様が描写されています。井の水神が、仏教的な竜女とされ、さらに手に水瓶を持つ「十一面観音」に習合されたことが分かります。水神の加護があっての上人の書写ですが、逆に上人の法徳を水神（竜女）が信仰するという仏教形式に変容されています。 これぞ佛の御国なるべき」と／この外に一首の霊歌あり／和泉式部参詣のおりふし／麓にて障のありければ／「晴れやらぬ身にうき雲のたなびきて 月のさわりとなるぞかなしき」と／詠じて伏したるその夜の夢に／「もとよりもちりにまじわる神なれば 月のさわりは何かくるしき」と／権現の御返歌あるゆえに／こころよく参詣を遂ぐ／ふしぎの霊験は／文学をはじめ挙て数へ難し／委くは予が観世音略伝図絵に出せり 万亭應賀誌 熊野三山の一つ那智山ですが、上段に描かれているのは那智の滝です。「かね石」、「貝石」の間を流れる滝には注連縄が張られ、滝の神を祀っていることが分かります。それを習合したのが如意輪観音（如意輪堂）ということです。 下段の画題は、和泉式部が麓で「月のさわり」（生理）になってしまってお詣りできず残念だと詠ったのに対して、熊野那智の神が浄不浄関係なく受け入れますと返答してくれたので、心置きなく参詣できたという逸話を描いています。滝の神は全ての穢れを洗い流す神であり、もとより女神ですから、そんなことは気にしないはずです。また、和泉（式部）故に、滝には深い縁があったのでしょう。 当代の人気歌舞伎役者三代目澤村田之助（さわむらたのすけ）」を「雁金五人男」の頭目、雁金文七に見立てた作品です。雁金五人男は、文七を筆頭に大坂で暴れまわった5人の無頼の徒で、元禄15年（1702）、大坂千日前で処刑されています。その後、人形浄瑠璃や歌舞伎に弱い者の味方をする善人として脚色され、人気を博しました。おそらく、彼らが揃って若く、しかも首領の文七が男前であったので、庶民の興味が尽きなかったのでしょう。江戸で人気の「白浪五人男」に対して、元祖「浪花の五人男」という位置づけです。 藍染の浴衣には、まさに雁が群れ飛ぶ様子が描かれており、肩に掛ける手拭いには頭合わせ三つ雁金の紋と田之助の定紋釻菊が意匠されています。5枚組作品の内の1枚ですが、全作品の背景全てが黒字に白の絣（かすり）模様となっており、まるで銀河系（軍団）のような印象を受けます。 安治川橋に並ぶ「橋の上の五人男」という姿が人形浄瑠璃『男作五雁金』）より踏襲されており、本作品もその流れを受けたものと想像されます。 Mikasa in his hometown of Nara, Japan.
