普人の知所なり 四代鶴屋南北『東海道四谷怪談』から、有名な「提灯抜け」の場面を描いています。神谷仁エ門（民谷伊右衛門）はお岩の父四谷左門を殺し、仇を討ってやると偽ってお岩と祝言を挙げたばかりか、隣家の伊東喜兵衛と共謀して面相の崩れる薬をお岩に飲ませ、喜兵衛の孫のお梅と祝言を挙げる性根の腐った人間です。それがために憤死したお岩は、様々な怪異を起こして、仁エ門を追い詰めていきます。 本作品は「蛇山庵室の場」で、仁エ門がお岩の供養のために迎え火を焚いていると、提灯の火が燃え移ったかのようになり、お岩の亡霊がその中から出てくるという仕掛け「提灯抜け（ちょうちんぬけ）」を画題としてしています。テレビの画面から抜け出てくる貞子の原型です。 大中臣能宣朝臣の一首は、夜には激しく燃え、昼には消えつつ思い悩む恋の歌ですが、それを迎え火の炎に揺れる提灯にお岩の怨霊を見て怯える、仁エ門の心情に擬えた作品です。特定の役者見立てとはなっていないように思われます。なお、お岩の実家・田宮伊右衛門屋敷跡に稲荷を勧請したところ崇りや怪異も止み、後に「於岩稲荷」として広く信仰されるようになりました。怨霊信仰の一種です。 百日毬栗頭（いがぐりあたま）の武将とくれば、悪党の典型的姿です。本作品は、「悪七兵衛景清」とあるので、平家の侍大将であった藤原景清であると分かります。謡曲、人形浄瑠璃、歌舞伎など多くの作品の主人公となっており、矛（薙刀？）を持って幔幕の前に佇む姿は、「大仏供養」の場面を描くものと思われます。僧兵姿で東大寺の大仏供養の場に紛れ、源頼朝の命を狙うのですが、露顕してしまい、大仏の肩に乗って追っ手を避ける有名な場面です。後日談として、日向に流され、目が見えなくなった景清が、娘人丸と邂逅し、娘の孝心に涙を流す場面も人気があります。柳下亭種員の詞書は、この両方を記しています。 和泉式部の和歌は情熱的な恋愛の歌で、恋人にもう一度会いたいという思いを表現しており、これを娘人丸の景清への思いに掛けたのが本作品です。ならば、日向の浜を舞台に描いた方が分かりやすいのですが、国芳はその部分はまた別の作品に仕立てており、避けたということです。景清は「歌舞伎十八番」の演目なので、八代市川團十郎見立ての作品と考えられます。百人一首に擬（なぞら）えられた役者見立ての作品ということです。 平安時代の伝説上の大盗賊「袴垂（はかまだれ）」と、藤原保昌の弟で強盗に身を落とした「保輔（やすすけ）」を重ね合わせて、歌舞伎等で創作された人物が「袴垂保輔」です。盗んだ葛籠を背負う、百日毬栗頭（ひゃくにちいがぐりあたま）の石川五右衛門の姿と似ているのは、盗賊の首領というイメージを表現するためです。実際、柳下亭種員が解説する、忍術を使って営中に忍び込み、名器が鳴いたために捕らえられる逸話は五右衛門のものです。 肝要なのは、百人一首の歌と袴垂保輔とを結びつけることなのだと分かれば、和歌の「しら波」と盗賊を意味する「白浪」を掛けた遊びを楽しむべきなのでしょう。「雲井にまがふ おきつしら波」、すなわち、「雲井たる殿中に忍び込んだ 袴垂保輔」という訳です。しかも、その袴垂保輔がこっそりと役者（四代中村歌右衛門？）見立てとなっていることに気付けば、本作品は、天保の役者絵禁止令を潜り抜ける凄技を隠しているということになります。技法的には、保輔の黒い衣装には正面摺が施されており、光を当てると豪華な意匠・紋様が浮かび上がってきます。本作品の制作者の態度こそ、忍術使いの白浪のようです。
