It’s easy to fly through these and get just about nothing out of it. Alternatively, when we drop in, slow down and truly take the time to make sure our core is driving the exercise and stabilizing through the movement, something that seems really simple can be challenging. One that I have needed this month many times. July has just felt crazy to me. Starting the month with the stress surrounding Bella’s ER visit and stitches gone wrong, into hectic travel for 2 weeks and then coming down with some kind of funk once we got home has just had me feeling like I’m way off kilter lately 😄 I’m not sure I’ve accomplished anything besides keeping the children alive this month and as someone that likes to try and squeeze productivity out of my spare moments, I’ve really had to just remember - it’s ok. Sometimes life is going to be a little more hectic than usual. It has taken me a good while to realize that we can either accept that and do our best, or rage against it and feel miserably frustrated about what we can’t control. As much as it bothers us, we aren’t always in control. Fortunately as my parents always used to tell us, we can still control our attitude. And part of me feels extra dissatisfied with that because that’s what I do for a living😅 But the reality is we live in a world where things don’t always go according to plan. Maria had a really rough week and working out took a back seat. I did the best I could and that ended up being just half the usual workouts . Today she’s mostly herself (besides the new teeth coming in😆🤷♀️) and I got right back to it. No stressing over last week, just getting right back to normally scheduled workouts. So many of us get discouraged and let a few missed days turn into weeks. It seems so simple but truly just staring again is so important for long term consistency. We don’t need perfection. We need consistency over time through the tough times, the missed days and all the things. It doesn’t have to be a Monday, you don’t need to start a new plan or start the one you were doing over, just start again and give your best. Consistency over the long term, not perfection in the short. I know the first reaction a lot of us have to a challenge in our day is, ‘how do I get rid of it?’ Or maybe just ‘whyyy!’ (guilty here 🤷♀️) When I started looking at so many of my daily challenges, especially the repeat ones, as a chance to learn something or grow in some way, it changed everything. Let me go ahead and admit I am very far from perfect in this practice 😅 but when I do it, it’s amazing the difference it makes. When I can step back and say maybe I’m supposed to learn something here, I can look at what was completely frustrating me in a new light and often I do indeed learn something or realize something in me that needs worked on. Short term it seems easier to just be frustrated and avoid or try to minimize challenging stuff. Long term, when we do the work and take the time to look at what we can improve, it truly does end up easier. Anyways, hope this is helpful to someone as it was to me! It’s really helped me In parenting situations that seems to happen over and over. And yes there are obviously times to think about those things. We need to plan. We need to learn from past things in our life. Thoracic mobility can be so helpful if you’re always feeling tight in the upper back or even if you feel like you’re usually twisting through your low back when you shouldn’t be. You can do the whole circuit or pick a few that feel best for you. 30-60 seconds depending on what you need. Do a few of these a few times a week to start creating more mobility in the area. Even just a few minutes can help! Move with intention, not speeding through the exercises.
