Although she spent her childhood playing in the fields beside her grandparents taking care of strawberries, she longed for city life and moved to Kyoto for college. She got to know Hikaru in a student organization supporting to build elementary schools in Laos. They travelled together in Asia. “I felt at peace to see the countryside similar to my hometown. I saw smiles on the faces of local children and I thought this might be what I was looking for. It was in Laos that I recognized simple small pieces of happiness unlike something fancy in city, Aika says. Aika and Hikaru got married some time after graduation and lived in Shiga, but they decided to move to Kurume, Aika’s hometown. In the midst of the pandemic, they wrote out what they wanted to do in the future, and they opened an atelier. For Aika, it is a kitchen where she makes strawberry jam, and for Hikaru, it is where he draws illustrations. They named their atelier “13”. They have cherished the date they first met each other. The building, where one of his friends lived, is located near the Yakuoin Temple and the Hikawa Shrine, and a garden, gets plenty of sunlight and fresh air. He found the place filled with good flow of energy and atmosphere. He had an idea that he wanted people to know about the place through flowers. Saito studied architecture in undergraduate and graduate school and started to work for a design office. He was involved in a big project for four years there. Everyone involved in architecture pursues good space and beautiful places, and it sometimes occurred to him that he was constantly expected to produce quality designs. He started to think that there is something more important than creating excellent designs, and came to recognize flowers are beautiful just as they are, which led him to work for a flower shop.
