She touches on clay, rotates the wheel slowly, and the clay goes up gradually. When she pushes delicately the top of the clay, it goes down and with rotation a shape of a vessel gradually appears. She notices it’s time her family is about wake up. Ms. Naoi is engaged in pottery in her atelier home in Tokyo. Everyday life as well as items and places she encounters while traveling are sources of her inspiration. She takes in pieces of inspiration and combines them in her own way to create a new work. things.が。 nice things.のお取り扱いについてのご連絡を絶えずいただきます。すごくうれしいことです。 nice things.は取次（問屋）を通していないのですべてのお取り扱いいただくお店さんとは直接取引になります。これには大きく二つの理由があります。一つには、自分たちが作ったものを自分たちで発送してお届けしたいという気持ちからです。nice things.では多くの作り手の人たち、生産者の人たちを取材させていただいていて、自分たちが作ったものを梱包してお客様や取扱店の方々に発送することをやっています。同じものづくりに携わる者として、そうしたかったのです。慣れないうちは発送がものすごく大変でしたし、多くの時間を費やしていました。でも、続けていくうちにnice things.が届いて、ページをめくっている読者や本を手にした取扱店の方々の顔が浮かぶようになってきました。同時に発送作業を通じて作り手の人たちや生産者の方々の想いも感じられているように思っています。 もう一つの理由は、nice things.のことを理解していただいている方々に取り扱っていただきたいということからです。取次を通すと全国の書店さんに一斉に届くので、出版社も負担なく便利です。入金の確認も取次でできます。でも、そのお店のお客さんの層と合わないところに配本されたりすることや同じような雑誌の中の一つとしてのみ扱われることがたくさんあって、そうすると書店さんも必ずしもnice things.を扱いたいわけではないこともあり、結果、お客さんに届かないのです。ですから、私たちはお客さんにnice things.のことを伝えていただけるようなお店さんに扱っていただきたいと思っていて、それにはお取り扱いいただく方がnice things.のことを好きであることが大事なことだと思っています。 海外に行かずとも国内の島だからこそ感じるものがある。 海に囲まれた島は、地続きの場所にはない、そこにだけあるものがある。 長崎・対馬に生まれた桑田隆介さんは、父親の仕事の都合で壱岐に移り10歳まで過ごし、再び対馬に戻って高校まで過ごした。その後、東京に出て大学卒業後、憧れのアパレルブランドの職に就いた。東京生活が長くなる中で、故郷へのずっと残っていた。あるとき、仲間たちと同じ長崎の五島列島福江島に行った。対馬とも壱岐とも違う島の雰囲気が新鮮に映った。縁があって五島に通うようになり移住することを決めた。コミュニティカフェ〈ソトノマ〉（@sotonoma_goto）を運営するようになり、東京のアパレル時代に知り合った建築家の谷尻誠（@tanijirimakoto）さんに依頼して〈hotel sou〉（@hotel_sou）をオープンさせた。その後、地元の対馬に〈hotel jin〉（@hotel_jin）をスキーマ建築計画（@schemataarchitects）の長坂常さんに依頼して2024年4月にオープンさせた。 桑田さんは五島で経験したことを対馬での活動に生かしながら、二つの島を往来している。国境の島はそれぞれに独特の文化を形成している。 日本の縁から何が見えるだろう？ We journey across the sea. Even without leaving the country, there are things that can only be felt on an island. An island surrounded by water holds what places connected by land do not— something that exists only there. Born on Tsushima, Ryusuke Kuwata moved to Iki because of his father’s work and spent his childhood there until the age of ten. He then returned to Tsushima, where he lived through high school. After that, he moved to Tokyo and, upon graduating, began working for an apparel brand he had long admired. As his years in Tokyo passed, thoughts of his hometown never quite left him. One day, he traveled with friends to Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. The atmosphere of the island—different from both Tsushima and Iki—felt strikingly fresh. Through a series of connections, he began visiting Goto regularly and eventually decided to relocate there. He went on to run the community café Sotonoma, and later opened hotel sou, asking architect Makoto Tanijiri—whom he had met during his apparel days in Tokyo—to design it. After that, he returned to his home island of Tsushima and, together with Schemata Architects led by Jo Nagasaka, opened hotel jin in April 2024. Drawing on what he experienced in Goto, Kuwata now weaves those lessons into his work on Tsushima, moving back and forth between the two islands. Border islands each cultivate cultures uniquely their own.
