IN THE GOODS.〉（@lifeinthegoods）を2014年にオープンさせた。 限りなく装飾を削ぎ落とした空間には、陶磁器、ガラス、木といった素材の手仕事のものがゆとりを持って配置されている。大きく２面に渡って開かれた窓からは柔らかな自然光が手仕事の道具たちの表情を浮かび上がらせる。そして窓からは福岡城の周りにある四季折々の街の木々、人々の行き交う姿を眺めることができる。 “ものを売る”という視点で考えてしまうと、どうしてもきりのない問いは出てきてしまう。一方で“エネルギーの受け渡し”だと思うと、お店を続ける意味があるのかもしれない。エネルギーを注いで作られたものを自分たちが丁寧に届ける。そういうものだと、例えば器の場合は使う側に「せっかくだからきれいに装うぞ」と少しの緊張感をくれたり、食べ終えた後も大事に洗って拭こうと思える。食洗機や掃除機は便利ではあるけれど、クロスでお皿をきれいに拭く時間や箒でサッサッと掃く時間が与えてくれるもの。暮らしの道具と共に、心を撫でてくれるような、気持ちを落ち着かせてくれる時間も届けていけるように。 そこから仕事を作り出そう。 菊本拓志（ひろし）さんは山口県山口市で〈薪窯パン 菊本〉（@kikumoto_panya）の屋号でパン屋を営む。 作るのはカンパーニュの1種類のみ、国産のオーガニックの小麦を使い体に優しいパン作りと自分たちらしい生活スタイルを考えてのことだ。 朝5時から生地をこね始め、パンを焼き、13時過ぎに片付けまで終える。そして妻である明日子さんと昼食を食べ、子供を迎えに行く。 以前、銀行で勤めていた菊本さんは、自分と家族の幸せを考えて今の営みを始めることにした。 Let’s start from thinking about how we want to live. Then create a job that goes well with our lifestyle. Hiroshi Kikumoto runs a bakery called 〈Makigama-pan Kikumoto〉in Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. Makigama-pan means bread baked with a wood-fired oven. He only makes pain de campagne, or “country bread.” He decided to do so because he wanted to bake body-friendly bread using domestic organic flour as well as make time with his family. He starts his work at 5 am, kneads the dough, bakes bread, and finishes all his work by a little past 1 pm. He has lunch with his wife Asuko and goes to pick up his child. He changed his work from a banker to a baker in pursuit of happiness of his family and his own. For the exhibitions she picks up tools that would make everyday life of eating, clothing and housing comfortable and enjoyable. She had long been a housewife and has become able to identify tools which she truly thinks are good as she uses them herself. Her hope is to pass on those tools to the younger generations and to connect them to good creaters. The 180-year-old house reside in peaceful countryside with a lot of permission trees. Yuka Yoshino, the owner of the store, became interested in tableware when she was in elementary school. She was fascinated with the beauty of a white porcelain plate with green color in the middle, which she came across in a magazine. Since then she was fond of tableware and finally opened her store〈Umi to Tsuki to〉at the age of 52. She had worked for a hospital for a long time. What supported her in those days of hard work was the times when she had tea with her favorite mug at home and thought about what to eat with which tableware for the day. The pleasure of using tableware was so important for her in everday life. )が移転オープンしたのは2022年の11月。そこには〈みずうみ喫茶室〉（@mizuumi_kissashitsu）を併設した。かつて田原さんがこの場所で「また頑張ろう」と思えたように、誰もが気持ちを転換するようなときに立ち寄ってもらいたいのと、米子に心落ち着く場所があることを知ってもらいたかった。 Some people would get one for the new year, and others use it habitually and buy it repeatedly. In the first place, the reason why we thought of making “Notebook of life” is… I myself used to have notebooks of blank white paper to write down my thoughts rather than planners you are meant to renew each year or diaries. It’s because that kind of notebooks allowed me to write whenever I want and as much as I want. I was free to write vertically, horizontally or diagonally, or draw some pictures. As my notebooks amounted to several, however, I started to have trouble finding what I wanted to look back because I had written too freely. “We all are on the way of our life”. In the journey of my life, I write down what I’m thinking at each moment, and there are times I look back and check “what was I thinking back then?” or “those words at that moment encouraged me”. I wanted to have clues for the writings as well as not to forget what I had in my mind as my goals or wishes at each moment of my life. “Notebook of life” is created based on the idea of planting seeds of “word” “things” and “imagination” so that you can write down your current thoughts and feelings, your words, where you are at the present moment. 紅白歌合戦の時間帯になっても英語の辞書を全ページめくっていい言葉がないか探しました。2度、3度と見返しながら。その後は熟語を探しましたが、除夜の鐘が鳴り響いてもこれっていうのは見当たらず。 ただそのとき、一つの文をメモしていました。 それが、 GOOD LIFE WITH NICE THINGS. でした。 nice things. いいかもしれないとだんだん思えてきました。 ナイスなもの。 things（もの）には有形のものも無形のものもある。 例えば、おじいちゃんが使っていた椅子。椅子という物体であるのとおじいちゃんの記憶や思い出も刻まれている。 niceは、それいいよねっていう感覚。 雑誌のタイトルは、その響きだけでつける場合も多いですが、意味合いを込めたかったのです。 今年は創刊から10周年。 振り返ることもたくさんありますが、気持ち新たに次の一歩を踏み出していきたいと思います。 nice things.のロゴはニューヨークで活躍するアーティスト、Sho Shibuyaくん（@shoshibuya）に作ってもらいました。 このアイコンもそうです。 彼は英語も話せないままニューヨークに行き、デザイナーとしての挑戦を始め、今なお成長を続けている。すごい人です。 創刊当初から休刊まではモデルを起用した作り込んだ表紙、復刊以降はテクスチャーやその時の取材でそのテーマで撮影した写真。 どれもそのときどきでベストだと思える表紙を作ってきました。 表紙は重要です。読者との接点であり扉です。中面でも特集の最初のページを扉と言います。女性誌や男性誌において、俳優やアイドルといった有名人を起用するのもその表紙に目がいくように、あるいはその表紙のモデルで買ってもらいたいという意図があったりします。 nice things.のこれからを考えていくなかで、表紙をどのようにしていくか考えていました。取材時だけの写真で構成することの難しさも感じていて、光、水面、影などを表現するテクスチャーを感じてもらえるような写真も考えました。そうするとどうしても似た写真が並ぶのと特集のテーマに関連することができません。そうしたなかで、絵やイラストは全く考えていなかったのですが、荻原さんの絵を見ていて色がついていながらモノトーンのような、静かでありながら動いているような、見る人によってそれぞれの想像が膨らむように感じてnice 半年の休刊期間を経て、復刊しました。 この号でほとんど全ての仕組みを変えました。 ・紙質を光沢紙から手触り感のあるものに変更。 ・判型を一回り小さく。 ・表紙の写真をモデルを使わず、テクスチャーのある写真に変更。 復刊以前にモデルを使っていたのは、人感を出したくて、ただ一方で「この人」という特定の人やイメージを固めるのではなく、「人がいる」ということが大事だったので客観的でフラットに見える外国人の女性のモデルを起用していました。復刊号で変えたのは、より想像できる幅を広げたかったのがあります。それとモデルを使って人為的に作り込むのではなく、光や影などの自然や人の営みを映し出そうと考えたのもあります。 ・広告を全て無くしました。 広告に頼らず、読者だけを向いていく、と決めていました。広告の依頼は今でもありますが、全てお断りしています。 ・取次（問屋）を通さず、書店、取扱店の方々との直接取引 復刊以前は取次に収めて、取次から全国の書店に配送していただいていました。便利なシステムで売上も取次各社とすればいいので手間もかかりません。でも業界全体の雑誌の平均返本率は40％中頃、つまり発行した雑誌の半分ぐらいは古紙化されています。自分たちで頑張って作った本の半分が廃棄されるのです。ただ本屋に並べればいいのではなく、その雑誌のことを理解している店主や書店員さんがその客層の方々にお伝えしていただけることが大事なことだと考えました。だから全て直接取引にし、地域によっては書店がないところもあるので書店以外のお店にも取り扱っていただくようになりました。 things.は2025年で創刊10周年に向けて。 「雑誌に何ができるのか」 あるいは、ときとして 「雑誌は必要なのか」 2020年ごろから雑誌マーケットは下降線を辿っていきます。 「雑誌の役割は？」 もはや時代は雑誌を必要としないのか。 「雑誌編集者は数十年前より進歩したのか？」 流行と共に歩いていた雑誌は、いつしかその流行の後追いをするようになり、やがて多様化した社会で大きな流行すらなくなった。 インターネットは瞬時にして情報を伝え、膨大な情報量を保有し、誰もが情報を発信できるようになった。雑誌が情報を発信する役割は縮小している。 時代は変遷し常に動き続ける。 流行と生きる雑誌ではなく、人と生きる雑誌。 情報ではなく、情緒が動く雑誌。 nice
