Taiwanese emerging photo artist Su Hou-Wen devoted nearly a decade, from 2014 to 2023, to capturing the rivers that wind through the region he calls home. By the riverside, everything exists in a state of transformation, as if drifting between the world we inhabit and the unseen shores that lie beyond. Within this "existence," layers of time rise to the surface, and the river, constantly rewriting memories, flows on as the present moment. Spanning close to a decade, the project aims to not only document the rivers, but also create for the rivers. The inception of this series had first begun to emerge since my relocation to Ankeng, Xindian. It was also the moment when I started to realize that as someone new to the area, how close I could be to water. The small towns and mountains upstream, permeating with a touch of wildness and some lost memories, have since become the captivating and inclusive sceneries and episodes that have compelled me to continue my wandering along the rivers. The development of human beings has been intertwined with rivers since time immemorial. Rivers nowadays have, however, become a mere resource for tourism and recreation to many an urbanite. The genesis of rivers was mythologized, while rocks with odd shapes transformed into memorials that have long been forgotten. Driven by my cravings for a unique paradise, I was eager to be a part of the river. I had little clues about whether these being documented are people who have long lived here with legacy passing down generations, or perhaps just those that arrive to escape from city life. I wandered through it all. All these people, activities, things, and sceneries that confused or intrigued me were documented and became my metaphors to demarcate a heterogeneity of life. These works, lucid expressions of her idea that “while there is absolute existence and relative existence, there can be only one existence,” were in keeping with the global currents in conceptual art at the time. Entering the 1980s, Kinoshita returned once more to painting. While Kinoshita’s style underwent frequent transformations, the underlying question of “What is existence?” remained a constant throughout her work. "This work was done by initially painting with a brush, then wiping with a cloth. The wiping means that the plane of the canvas and plane with the paint on it are of equal value. I did this because in my own mind, this is the same as it has always been, because I have a constant desire to make two-dimensional planes equal. Adopting that method, making the work itself an entity. All entities, like stars in the heavens, were created by the gods and may appear to be random, but exist in a specific relative order. But as far as we can tell, they exist naturally, and that existence is incred- ibly powerful. The promotional flyer for At the Bench features a photograph of two actors sitting on a bench, captured from behind. In a previous event, Okuyama talked his thoughts on photographing people: “I don’t think that photographing someone’s face straight on is necessarily the most compelling way to convey their essence. I’ve always felt a certain hesitation about facing someone’s face directly from the front. (If I absolutely have to shoot someone head-on, I ask them to turn their body slightly to the side while keeping their face directed toward the camera. I think this approach is a more captivating way to capture their features.)” This perspective might also be reflected in the second installment of a trilogy that “attempts to depict people through non-human subjects” "windows". When viewing the 724 photographs of windows, each rendered with its own distinctive character, they almost begin to take on a human presence. His works are included in the collections of Tate, London; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; La Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; Swiss Foundation for Photography, Winterthur; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Tokyo Photographic Art Museum; and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. Since losing his parents’ house and his mother in the 2011 tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake, Hatakeyama has been documenting the changing landscape of his hometown, Rikuzentakata. "No matter how grand the vision, when a person thinks of something the image that he sees is no more than the trifling and ordinary scene that he is so accustomed to—as one's bedroom." （Extracted from the artist's statement in 2010） In 2007, Nagashima participated in an artists residence in Switzerland and the photographs she made at that time are reproduced in this volume, which are of flowers along with views of her residence and her son. The images were inspired by a set of flower photos she found in a box of her deceased grandfather's home. The photographs in that box were made by her grandmother 25 years prior. Nagashima's work is characterized by her documentation of her family. Through the photos of flowers and her diaristic entries, she has found a new means of creating a document of her family despite the separation of time and distance. Wedged into the pages randomly are airline tickets, memos, and blank sheets of craft paper. The sense of shuffle and easy re-ordering dispenses with linear narrative in favor of an accidental, open-ended reading. The idea to use leftover fabric scraps for the binding came from Nagashima, who had learned from her mother that something saved 'just in case' could become a one-of-a-kind treasure. For example, In 2015, Kazuhei Kimura（"The Other Side Of the Window"）visited Emi Nakata exhibition, a few years before publishing his first photobook. In 2016, when we visited Taipei for the first time, a young girl in early elementary school sat by herself, curiously looking through the photobook for a long time. and I also remember Lin Shihyen（"Hear a pin drop"）standing and holding this photobook at a slideshow event. Death — it visits even within the confines of the family, that most intimate of connections. With it, new life is born into the world. Saeki cuts through the course of the obvious, everyday life, to show the invisible, mysterious moments in which the what is fading interacts with what is just beginning. Coming into photographs such as these, it becomes possible to imagine which riverside we currently stand on. The collection also includes images corroded by seawater and mold, capturing the ephemeral and transformative essence of the landscape. This work is an attempt to capture the layered essence of landscape, with Yuki Shimizu's photography reveals the unexpected presence. It reexamines the lived experience of time through the relationship between water and people, delving into poignant of the beings entwined in the cycle of water. This photo, which might appear to resemble the surface of raw flesh, depicts an spring pond which called oasis at the Tottori Sand Dunes. It is said that when heavy snow blankets the dunes, the rising groundwater levels, combined with the low permeability of volcanic ash in the soil, sometimes give birth to these springs pond. Her first retrospective in Japan is currently at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, until August 18. During the 60s, KINOSHITA influenced by the avant-garde art collective Group "i"gathering of artists in Kobe, began to explore more deeply her burgeoning interest in questions of existence. In the 70s she produced numerous works that used photography to ponder the relationship between image and perception, and image and matter. Kinoshita's photo series, lucid expressions of her idea that "while there is absolute existence and relative existence, there can be only one existence," earned her high acclaim. It was an approach also in keeping with currents in international art during this period, leading to a solo exhibition in Heidelberg in 1981. In the early '80s, Kinoshita returned to painting, concluding that the best approach was to create existence itself on the picture plane. She broke away from schematic concepts with each iteration of her evolving brushwork. Kinoshita passed away in 1994 at age 55, leaving a legacy of over 700 paintings and drawings since her return to painting in 1982. The exhibition showcased negatives illuminated by a projector, also including a shot from 2016 when we AKAAKA went to Taiwan for a slideshow event. This garden is a place where traces of his grandfather's efforts are felt everywhere. He used meal leftovers for compost and created handmade trellises and stakes to help the plants grow every year. Odds and ends leftover from everyday life played a part here as tools. For only a brief moment, these various objects lent their power. Inadvertently, the garden became a kind of basket that held all sorts of seeds and living things. Here two forces intersect: plants wildly growing, and grandfather's hands. In the winter of Shun Kataoka's fourth year as a photographer, his grandfather departed from this world. The planter of seeds was absent. Even so, the garden, laid open to the transition of seasons, took hold of the seeds in its soil with an expansive embrace and helped them sprout. Kataoka has continued photographing that garden for over 10 years. Dead plants become nourishment for the next generation. And the many-layered traces of his grandfather that remain in the garden are also nourishment for the photographer. People desire plants. They raise them, and co-exist with them. People come and go and places change their appearance. Does the repetition and circular flow of things continue without end? "To look intently at this garden's limited space is to know the unceasing intertwining of people and plants. When I close my eyes and touch the greenery, these boundaries intermingle.
