May 16 – June 14, 2025 at TARO NASU） "I assumed that the moon in the photograph was the sun. When I found out that it wasn't the sun but the moon, a vague picture of sunlight and moonlight together rose in my mind. Cyanotype, invented in England in the 19th century, is a classic technique for creating images known for the beautiful blue tones produced. I decided to apply this technique that emerged in the dawn of photography, using the light of the sun to print photographs taken in the light of the moon. As the full moon approached and nights grew brighter, I would go out to photograph, choosing places that artificial light didn't reach to set up my tripod. On it, I mounted a 6×9 medium format camera loaded with negative film, opened the shutter, and exposed the film to the moonlight for anywhere from a few dozen seconds to a few dozen minutes. Then I developed the film, scanned it, transferred the scanned images to a computer, and printed out inverted images on digital negative film. I placed the film over washi paper coated with cyanotype solution that had been left to dry, then sandwiched the film and washi paper between two glass plates and exposed it to sunlight during the day. What appears in the finished photographs are blue landscapes and scenes that have been bathed in moonlight and sunlight. Moonlight and sunlight share the same space. The moon and the sun-the two together-create a cycle that is synonymous with time itself. The moon rises and sets, the sun rises and sets. If this repetition constitutes time, then in photographs where the moon and the sun neither appear nor disappear, time does not exist. They are time itself, and yet timeless. Its origins are unclear, but there is a record of a performance back in 1767. The tradition has been passed down by the people of the village through changing times. This timespan is of course connected to the present, but it is not visible to the human eye. That inspired me to try, through this work, to communicate with somewhere a little removed from this time and this place. But where exactly is that slightly distant location? To find some clues, I decided to start by recruiting photographers, models, and other collaborators from among the village inhabitants. In a village that loves Kabuki, many people volunteered, and we quickly had a framework in place. I thought that with eleven people, including me, taking photographs, we would see a good range of different scenes, and I was happy to see the work begin to take shape when the dedicated photographer role (me) was scrapped. This created a way of looking at the same place and the same time from a variety of perspectives that ought to be natural and sensible. This perspective—which is not special in any way—breaks the powerful relationship between photographer and subject, creating a stage on which it is both you and me who are the ones photographed. Through this process, we collected more than five thousand photographs. Even film that looked like it had captured nothing had such beautiful colors; I felt that we were connected to the world somewhere. Looking back at these photographs, I began to think that this slightly distant place was not a fictional place, but rather a place between the past and the present, or between the present and the future. I learned that without even realizing it, we are always communicating with places that are a little removed, and we are looking in all sorts of directions. Let's begin to talk again about the knowledge we all had when we were born, like the time when I was someone else, you were me, and someone was you.2025/11/28に公開- 指定なし1.09%1941from Shigeo Gocho exhibition"FAMILIAR STREET SCENES"(October 4–29, 2025, at PURPLE, a show has already ended.) In Familiar Street Scenes (1981) was to be Gocho’s third and final self-published photobook. It was a time for Japanese society right before the arrival of the bubble economy when a colorful consumer culture permeated the cities. By their outward manner, it appears as if they are looking not at an actual human being but at someone on the other side of a TV screen. There actually may have been interaction between the performers and the spectators, but it isn't shown in any of the photographs. That being the case, we can no longer know whether what people are looking at are other people or products seen in the city or on TV. In the photographs in which "eyes are meeting but don't actually meet" Gocho cleverly captures this aspect of city life. Gocho, walking around the city with camera in hand, is not free from these conditions. I feel that the last sentence in his preface, "And I take photographs from the edge of people's comings and goings," speaks not only of the physical position of the photographer but also of a boundary from which he photographs that implies questions as to whether his existence comes into the awareness of others, of whether it allows for his existence as an individual. In the same preface, he talks about "inexplicable shadows of human existence." In the "shadows" that cross the photographer's field of vision, there may also be a feeling of discomfort from human beings being equated with something other than human beings. Private Scenes is a series in which Masahisa Fukase photographed himself in various locations, holding the camera at arm’s length to capture fragments of his own body within the frame. It is considered one of his major works from his later years. In 1992, he exhibited Private Scenes ’92 at the Ginza Nikon Salon, showing over 450 prints selected from various series, including Private Scenes, Buku-Buku, Bero-Bero, and Hibi. Not long after this exhibition, Fukase was severely injured in an accident and remained in long-term care until his passing in 2012. In the work Private Scenes, He painted directly over the gelatin silver prints with watercolor, sometimes adding words to complete the works. In Shimane, clouds form and dissipate frequently, perhaps because of the strong winds there. This phenomenon is perfectly described by the words from an ancient Japanese poem —Yakumo Tatsu (eight clouds rise). On some days, the rain falls and stops repeatedly and rainbows appear every 30 minutes. Weather, when it changes this often, seems to be alive rather than simply a physical phenomenon. Wind and earth are in constant interaction, bringing changes and shaping our ways of life and thinking. The smooth transition of the four seasons brings diversity to landscapes and living creatures and is the reason why the power of restoration is strong. Even in this region, forests have been redefined from living spaces to sacred, distant spaces or irrelevant areas. Except for those who work in the mountains, most people lead their daily lives flat. Thus, the choice to live in harmony with nature is conspicuously equivalent to actively embracing the existence of both special and everyday aspects, and, wind and soil. The tireless change of seasons is a two-sided coin that benefits the land but, sadly, also brings disasters. In time, though, vegetation grows there again. After all, the interaction of wind and soil is what gives permanence to life's diversity and resilience. I turn this way of seeing things towards daily life. If we regard the earth as a protective force, then wind represents a force for change. Photographer Seido Kino, known for his previous work MOTHER (2020), which captured both the continuity and disconnection between generations through the traditions of ironmaking and mold crafting, broadens his perspective in this new photo book. This time, Kino turns his lens toward the Okuizumo region of Shimane Prefecture, where the ancient Tatara smelting tradition has been practiced for over a thousand years. Using this tradition as a starting point, he expands his focus to explore the concept of fuudo (literally “wind and earth”), examining how the region’s natural environment, cultural heritage, and the lives of its people are deeply intertwined. If we regard the earth as a protective force, then the wind represents a force for change. In Kino’s photographs, this dynamic interplay between nature and humanity becomes vivid. In a landscape where the skies and weather shift as if alive, the forces of wind and earth continuously shape the lives and thinking of the people. The unique relationship between natural forces and spiritual practices emerges clearly through his images. These photographs do not merely capture a history rooted in the distant past—they reflect the tireless change of the present and hint at the resilience and diversity that may define the future.
