One of my favorite kimono teachers @shinobumizuno wrote the other day that she doesn’t want to be treated nicely when wearing kimono and she only wants to be ignored. I totally understand that, because I also just want to be ignored. But it’s fact that when you wear a kimono in Japan, your surrounding is going to treat you really well. And I like that! Because as a foreigner living in Japan, I’m always treated like *the foreigner* wherever I go. I hate especially when they point out how white my skin is or how well I speak Japanese. These conversations are only reminding me that I’m not seen as a part of the society and make me very uncomfortable. But when I wear kimono, I usually get compliments on my kimono and no one is surprised that I speak Japanese (at least not that much, because they figured). My newest hobby that I’ve started this year is making temari (手毬). In the past temari were used as a toy, but today you mostly see them only as deco. I’ve always wanted to make one, but I didn’t know where to start. Then I found the temari subscription box from @couturier_by_felissimo . The subscription lasts for a year starting in March. Every box contains all the things you need to make a temari and the process is so well illustrated and explained (but it’s all in Japanese!!) that it’s such a pleasure to work on them. I also like every single design so far The big yellow temari, however, is one I designed myself and also tried a different core for it. Can’t wait to work on the next one! When I had this kimono tailored last year, some of my followers were really concerned about the meaning of wearing a white kimono. First of all: none of them were Japanese. Which already shows that this is once again a misconception of Japanese culture. There are 2 things I have to make clear: 1) yes, white kimono were in the past worn for mourning. Not many areas in Japan have white mourning gowns anymore. Black kimono have become the majority of mourning gowns. But you might still spot a white kimono here and there at funerals. 2) yes, white “kimono” is worn by the dead. Luckily, in Japanese language there is a clear distinction for this type of “kimono”. It’s called “shinishzoku (死装束)” and is something completely different from what I’m wearing here. This point needs more explanations, but I can’t go too much into detail in a simpel IG post On top of that this kimono is NOT pure white like mourning gowns and shinishzoku would be. Not to forget that this kimono is a tsumugi (紬, type of silk) which is a weave for casual kimono. Lastly, you should never forget that I am a kimono professional with licenses (plural!!) on my wall. When I look at these pictures I can’t believe how well my jūnihitoe (十二単) dressing skills have gotten in the past year. Especially when I think about that I had zero knowledge about this last year in spring. Putting on all those slippery layers of silk using only my 2 hands and 2 (slippery silk) ties was definitely something I had to get used to. But after a year I made it already this far. Of course I still could be better at tying the kakeo (掛緒, the obi on front) and the hem could look better, too, but this is already better than most what I’ve seen online.
