I must have binge played about 30 hours a week during the first month of getting the game, then quickly realized that it’s probably not the most responsible adult thing to do.😅 I haven’t played the game for quite a while now, and always feel a bit guilty about my much neglected island & villagers.😥 For those unfamiliar, Tom Nook, Timmy and Tommy are tanukis (たぬき, i.e., Japanese raccoon dogs). Despite their similar masked appearances, the tanuki is not related to the common raccoon.🦝 They are classified as members of the family Canidae making them relatives of dogs, wolves and foxes!😯 Although the tanuki is an actual extant animal, they play a prominent role in Japanese mythology/folklore.🍃 They are often depicted as mischievous, jolly, possessing magical abilities (e.g., shapeshifting), but also quite gullible, absentminded, and bibulous (which is a fancy word for being excessively fond of drinking alcohol, sake in this case).🍶 If you want to learn more about the folklore tanuki (which is referred to as the “bake-danuki”), I highly recommend a lesser known Studio Ghibli animation called Pom Poko, released back in 1994. It’s a surprisingly deep film dealing with sophisticated themes and quirky subject matters (you will find out how a tanuki fly).😂 Be warned though, it is not a child-friendly animation. Has anyone played the new updates & DLC that came out last week?! Should I get the DLC?!😬 . . This style of cookie making (i.e., cutting and piecing cookie dough together prior to baking) should be attributed to @henteco_mori.💚 I particularly enjoy this style because it's almost entirely made of cookie dough. Mundane stuff but I do feel more at ease and adult-ish to take proper care of my body (something I find to be of increasing importance as I navigate middle age).😅 Of all the Disney characters, Baymax is one of my favorites.❤️ His shape is particularly well-suited for steamed buns - so white, fluffy, and most importantly, easy to make!🤣 I should really work on my bread making skills but to be honest, it hurts me. Both physically and mentally.😑 My forearms and fingers always hurt the next day after kneading bread dough (even with the help of an electric mixer). It's also somewhat frustrating working with living organisms (i.e., yeast). These Baci di dama cookies were flavoured with matcha and cocoa powder.🍵🍫 "Baci di dama" is a type of Italian sandwich cookie (literally translates to “lady’s kiss”, such a pretty name, isn’t it?😊) usually made with butter, flour and hazelnut flour (but can also be made with other types of nut flour, almond in this case, since I always have almond flour in the pantry) with a chocolate centre.😁 With the exception of the chocolate filling, they were made with all dough (and no icing) …which was a bit of a challenge when it comes to their teeny tiny facial details (harder and harder to do as I attempts to explain the shadows observed on a full moon (not unlike the Man in the Moon).🌕🐇 One popular version goes like this (I like to retell this story each year, mostly to scare children 🤣): Many, many centuries ago, the Jade Emperor (sometimes also referred to as the “Emperor of Heaven”, basically the equivalent of Zeus in Chinese mythology) wanted to test the virtues of the animals (don’t ask me why, as with Greek mythology, the Chinese mythical deities are full of whims and human peculiarities 🙄). So, he appeared before the fox, monkey, and rabbit as an decrepit old beggar seeking food. The three animals readily agreed, then headed out to find food for the old beggar. The fox returned with a fish, the monkey with a fruit, but the rabbit came back empty-handed. Filled with shame and remorse, the rabbit said to the old beggar, “I’m sorry I cannot fulfill my promise to you, but I can give myself to you. Eat me, please!” and promptly jumped into a pit of roaring fire.😱 Deeply moved by the rabbit’s self-sacrifice, the Jade Emperor decided to bestow upon him/her/it (what is the proper pronoun for a mythical rabbit?!😅) the title of “Jade Rabbit” and sent [insert gender neutral pronoun] to live in the Moon Palace.
