For those of you who may or may not be familiar with PUZZLE PUNKS, they are Shinro Ohtake and EYE, two of Japan's proud cult icons who have been struggling for many years, crossing over lightly from the contemporary art world to the underground music world. In this issue, I have tried to edit both visual and sound works by PUZZLE PUNKS so that you can enjoy both sides of the band throughout the entire issue. First, the A and B sides of the magazine feature artwork by Ohtake and EYE, and the 10” vinyl record (only special edition) that accompanies the magazine is a 14-track album PUZZPUNN, PUZZLE PUNKS' first new record in 26 years (the regular edition includes a flexible disc with 2 tracks). In addition, this text book includes an essay by critic/editor Masato Matsumura, who writes about the individual activities of two artists and their history from the formation of PUZZLE PUNKS to this latest release. Music critic Atsushi Sasaki once described PUZZLE PUNKS as "an audio/visual work that you hear with your eyes and see with your ears." Coincidentally, I feel that this book (and record) has turned out just like that. I hope you will "listen to the magazine" and "look at the record" to enjoy the phenomenon of the revival of PUZZLE PUNKS, which further extends the history of contemporary art and underground music.
