Newly remastered by Robin Schmidt, the set will be available on December 18th. “/04 /05” is a self-cover album featuring classic tracks by Ryuichi Sakamoto, including movie themes, commercial songs, solo works, and YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) tracks. These pieces are primarily performed on the piano, making the album a definitive “best-of” collection of Sakamoto’s music, with a focus on his piano renditions. The artwork for “/04 /05” has also been revealed today. For the original “/04” and “/05” albums, Sakamoto used images taken with an early digital camera, which became distorted due to corrupted image data. For this new release, those original photos have been reworked and arranged in a fresh design, with the images now placed on the left and right sides of the cover. Composed for the 2005 film Tony Takitani (directed by Jun Ichikawa) and based on the short story by Haruki Murakami, “Solitude” is one of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s well-appreciated pieces. It was featured in his final solo piano performance in the 2024 concert film Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, and was performed many times in his earlier concerts. Though the piece may sound simple with its repetitive phrases, achieving clear and consistent resonance for each note is quite challenging. This became even more difficult for Sakamoto during the recording of Opus as his stamina and muscle strength had declined. In celebration of the long-awaited first analog release of the Tony Takitani original soundtrack (available on September 25, 2024), the piano score is now available for the first time on the official score site.
