先週、ロンドンに来て２年が経ちました！家も友達も恋人も話せる言葉すら、な〜んにもなかったこの国に、今では大切なものがキラキラ詰まっているので驚き。驚きと言いつつ、ノートに箇条書きで書いてあった理想の状態が着々と叶っているだけでもある。「２年前の泣きべそかいてた私！全然大丈夫やで〜！」と言いたいが、言えないので、今もどこかで頑張る誰かにエールです。具体的に想像できるものは大抵手に入るのである。 Last week marked two years since I moved to London! When I arrived, I had nothing in this country, no home, no friends, no partner, not even a language I could speak.haha And yet, somehow, it's now filled with so many things I treasure. Surprising, really, though maybe not, since it's really just the ideal life I'd written out in bullet points in my notebook, steadily coming true. I'd love to tell my past self, the one who was on the verge of tears two years ago, "Hey, you're going to be just fine!" But since I can't, consider this a cheer for anyone out there still pushing through. If you can picture it clearly enough, you can usually make it happen!

大学院での生活も折り返し地点。この前エッセイが返ってきて全部めっっちゃ点が高くて（オール秀）、30歳をこえて初めて英語を習い初め、なんなら論文も初めて書くような人間（美大あるある）でも、パッションと努力に楽しさという名のガソリンが注ぎ続けられる限り、マジでもう、何でもやれるんだわ。この感じ２年続いてる自分にあっぱれ、引き続きやってく。 I’m now halfway through my master’s programme. I just got my essays back and the scores were all Distinctions. I only started learning English after turning 30, and I’d never even written academic papers before, which is common for art school graduates, but as long as passion and effort keep being fuelled by enjoyment, you really can do almost anything. I give a lot of credit to myself for keeping this going for two years. I’ll keep pushing forward!!!

私の地味生活を豊かに向上させている、最近のガチお気に入り９選です。 1 せいろ日本から持参。蒸し野菜は神。本格っぽいのに超簡単なので必須。２ @braun_global の時計アラームが必要だからとスマホを持ち込んで寝るのが嫌で買ったが超超超正解。チクタク音がないし、タップするとほんのり明るくなるし最高。アラームを言い訳にスマホスクロールしながら寝るのやめたいもんな。３ @nothing Phone とイヤホンもうiPhoneは古いという持論。中身はGoogle Androidで外観や中のグラフィックがかっこいい最強スマホ。Gemini連携が気持ちい。Macとエアドロップできないのだけ傷。もはやパソコンの方をもう変えたい。４ Aesopのお香：@aesop さんに頂いたもの。陽炎（かげろう）の香り、いい…。夏の地面からてりてりと立ちのぼる蒸気をあえて、寒い冬に想起し熱を感じる贅沢。私は推しブランドしかPRせん。Aesopは自腹で超いっぱい買ってる永遠の推し。#PR #aesop ５ M&Sのランプ：イギリスのスーパーで見かけて7000円くらいで買い！某有名ブランドの気配を感じるのでうーん思想的にこういうのは買うべきではないよなと思いつつ、貧乏大学生なので許してくれ。10万のランプは買えんのじゃ。６ @iittala のグラス：食洗機も、手が滑って落としても無敵なグラスを６つお迎え。丈夫で数があることで、ガンガン使えるので生活が心地良くなった。機能的で丈夫な器と手洗いの繊細な器はバランスよく持つと豊かになるな。７ランプ：ビンテージショップで5000円くらいで買った激安ランプ。８アクセサリーケース：蚤の市で一目惚れの美しい形。９植物：日本を離れるときに泣く泣く植物をお譲りして２年、イギリスに長く住む目処が立ったのでついに植物を迎えた。植物がある家というのはその場所に定住する長い未来を暗示してくれるからグッと心地よいのかもしれん。 10 台所からの景色で〆

さっきスーパーに兎や卵などイースター風のチョコレートが置いてあって、ずいぶん気が早いなあとは思いつつ、イギリスで二度、同じ季節を繰り返そうとしていることに気がつきました。人生も30周以上してくると人（少なくとも私）は、同じ季節を自分が何度繰り返したのかということに無頓着になってくるように思いますが、ロンドンではこれを０からまた新鮮に数えている。ジャネーの法則で、人生における1年の比率が子供は大きく、また新鮮な体験の多いことで、記憶が濃密になり時間が長く感じられるなどとはよく言いますが、イギリスに来てからの私は子供に戻ってしまったかのように、幼い英語を発話しながら横たわるツリーや大きな生のハムに目を丸くしているのです。そういう意味では私は人よりも時間の体感が長いということで、それは時間的な概念を超えて長生きができているということなのかもしれません。帰り道に役目を終えて歩道に横たわるツリーを避けながら、私は人生で同じこの繰り返しをあと何度できるのだろうかと考えました。（続きは写真を横へスライドお願いします） Earlier today at the supermarket, I noticed Easter-themed chocolates shaped like rabbits and eggs. It felt a little early, and yet it made me realise that I am about to experience the same season for the second time in the UK. Once you have lived through more than thirty cycles of life, I think you start to lose track of how many times you have repeated the same seasons. At least, I have. But here in London, I feel as though I am counting them again from zero, freshly and attentively. There is the idea known as Janet’s Law, that a year occupies a larger proportion of a child’s life, and that time feels longer because experiences are new and memories are denser. Since coming to the UK, I feel as though I have returned to childhood, speaking in clumsy, immature English, widening my eyes at Christmas trees laid out on the pavement and at enormous slabs of uncooked ham. In that sense, perhaps I experience time more slowly than others, and maybe that means I am living longer in a way that goes beyond chronological time. As I walked home, avoiding Christmas trees that had fulfilled their purpose and now lay abandoned on the pavement, I wondered how many more times in my life I would be able to repeat this same cycle. And then I realised that I want to spend this exact time of year in exactly the same way, over and over again. Ignoring ageing and changes in lifestyle, even if I were lucky enough to repeat this moment another fifty times, seeing Easter chocolates in the supermarket and tilting my head, thinking “that’s rather early”, it still would not be enough. （The rest is written in the comments） 📷️ お正月写真は @mn92_diary に撮ってもらいました。

先日読んだ論文で「Egg-freezing millennials（卵子凍結するミレニアル世代）」というものが社会現象の一例的に説明されていて、ほほう？となった。卵子凍結を２度すませた1992年生まれの私はつまり、この社会現象の一端か。自らの内側から湧き出る自分の意思で、自由に選んだはずのあらゆる選択が、バイオポリティクスによって静かにコントロールされていることを初めて実感した瞬間である。医療人類学で妊娠やジェンダーと社会構造の密接な繋がりについて日々致死量の論文に埋もれて生きる中で、個人的に抱いていた妊娠に関するもやもやの答えが出たのでnoteに書きました。 noteではフランスの社会学者ピエール・ブルデューのハビトゥスの概念をベースに、アルジェリアのカビール社会で家が身体に植えつける男女ヒエラルキーとは？ SNSによる「幸せな家族像」の視覚的ハビトゥスとは？卵子凍結の辛さと「いつか産むため」の身体管理的ハビトゥスとは？など触れつつ、自身のだいぶ辛かった卵子凍結の話や、じゃあ色々学んで結局どう思ったかなど書いてます。プライベートな実体験を含むので途中から有料にしてますが、途中まではプロフィールのリンク先よりお読みいただけます。 I read a paper recently that described “egg-freezing millennials” as a kind of emerging social category, and I found myself thinking—oh, so that’s me. Having frozen my eggs twice, born in 1992, I am literally part of this phenomenon. What I had believed were entirely personal, freely made decisions suddenly felt shaped, quietly but powerfully, by biopolitics. It was the first time I realised how deeply my “choices” were entangled in wider social forces. As I spend my days buried under a lethal dose of medical-anthropology readings on reproduction, gender, and social structure, some of the vague, uneasy feelings I’d always carried about pregnancy finally started to make sense. I wrote about that. In the piece, I draw on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, touching on: • the gender hierarchy embodied in Kabyle houses in Algeria • the “visual habitus” created by SNS images of the happy family • the pain of egg freezing and the “body-management habitus” of preparing to “someday give birth” I also write honestly about my own very difficult egg-freezing experiences and, after learning all these theories, what I ultimately think now. It includes personal details, so part of the essay is behind a paywall, but the first half is available through the link in my profile.

最近のお家時間の雑多記録。秋ですね。忙しなくも、こんなに心ほかほかの生活をしているのは人生ではじめてです。大学院は吐血レベルでハードなんですが肌艶はすこぶる良い。あと、表情が柔らかくなったと沢山の古い友人達に言われます。やったね✌ Recent fragments from my time at home. Autumn has come. Life has never been this busy yet so heartwarming at the same time. Graduate school is brutally demanding, but my skin has never looked better. And many old friends have told me my expression has softened. Yay!

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”「人はなお、自らの内に混沌を抱いていなければ、踊る星を生み出すことはできない。」哲学者フリードリヒ・ニーチェの言葉です。@aesop の新しいフレグランスの世界に一足早くお邪魔して、思うことあったので勝手に書く（発売は9月1日からみたいです）。「アバヴアス、ステオーラ」って商品名よくわからんくてはじめ呪文かと思ったんだけど、ステオーラは星の古英語でつまり「Above us star」。私たちの目の前にどーんと広がり輝く広大な可能性。あとイメージするのは流れ星だったりして、自分の意思で突き進むものと。会場で詩の朗読があって、そこで「星は自分だけの軌道を刻み自分の物語を探す」「未知へ飛び込めるだろうか」っていう言葉があって。そういうの聞きながらクンクン香り嗅いでるうちに1年間の、楽しかったけどほんまに困難だらけのロンドンでの生活のことが、香りとばちーん！と重なった。ばちんと繋がったのはこのフレグランスの香りのひとつであるフランキンセンスによるものなのではと思う。フランキンセンスは鎮静作用があって、心の乱れを静めると言われている。私みたいなアドレナリンの塊みたいな人間にはぴったりで、私は自宅に天然樹脂香を常備して寝る前にすんと嗅ぐようにしてる。ロンドンで仕事して勉強して限界眠れない夜に、何度この香りを嗅いだだろうか？とはいえそのままだと「うっ」ってなるはずのフランキンセンスが、Aesopの世界では異様に爽やかな香りのバニラビーンとカルダモンと融合して力強く透明。何度でも嗅ぎたくなる類のつれない甘さがあるのが憎い。ちょっと語りすぎてきもいかもだけど、この1年間ほんまにいろんなことがあって。SNSでは涼しい日常を連投してるけど、拙い英語での三十路超えての海外生活はそりゃあ大変。東京では当たり前にあった色々なものが何もないし。そんな私の体内にはいつだってモヤモヤがあるし、それがザワザワなびいて寝れない夜がある。そんな折、Aesopの会場で星の香りと共にニーチェの言葉を見たときに、混沌を抱いてこそ人は踊る星を生み出せるんだと、そういう自分のざわざわした感情が強く肯定された気がした。帰宅してもう一度すんとひとりで香りを嗅いだ。ただの香りじゃなくて、物語がある香りをやっぱり纏いたいと思った夜だった。 #PR #aesop #aboveusteorra #aesopfragrance

We are proud to announce the release of a new book : “Nature, People, Life – 24 Perspectives of the Riches of Life in Ama Town, Oki Islands.” What does richness mean to us today? Inspired by the question, this book features 24 interviews with people connected to Ama Town. Through their perspectives, we reflect on the richness found in nature, in people, and in the everyday. Over 100 years ago, writer Lafcadio Hearn wrote of Oki: "A place where one escapes civilization and discovers oneself." This book invites us to revisit that sentiment, now in a modern context. 私が幼少期に自分のことを「知能が低い馬鹿」だと自認したタイミングは星の数ほどあってだな。例えば小学校のそろばんの授業。当時わたしの住んでいた和歌山の田舎では、クラスのほとんどの生徒がなぜか基礎教養かのようにそろばん教室に通っていた。私はその中で本当に本当に数少ない例外で、一度目のそろばんの授業で周りの全員が勢いよく玉を弾くなか、初めて触るそろばんを前に一人しくしく泣いた。この手のエピソードは本当に、地方の山林で見上げる夜空の星くらいあるんだけどキリがないので割愛する。しかし私は計算もできない漢字も書けない歴史などひとつも、ほんのひとつだって覚えることのできない馬鹿だった。（Please see the comments section for the English version.）母親は子供達のいいところをのびのび伸ばすような人だったので、頭のいい兄はエリートコースに邁進する一方で、私には漫画家セットやイラストソフト、ペンタブなどを買い与え、ある日家から遠い画塾を見つけたかと思うと、毎週車で送り迎えをしてくれた（今思えば神）。そのおかげで今があると言ってもいいが「自分は勉強ができないが絵は描ける」という猛烈なアイデンティティは私の強みをのびやかに伸ばしながらも知能の低さの自認をより深いものにしていった。それが、留学して世界トップテンの大学(QS2024)で学ぶ中で、32歳にしてはじめて「自分は勉強ができないわけではなかったのでは」とだんだん思いはじめた。第二言語での学術的な講義に毎日心躍るし、それをクリティカルに批評できる。自分の意見を意図的に組み立てることができる。エッセイではスペルや冠詞、グラマーのミスでは細かく減点されず、どう論理を展開したかに焦点が当てられる為、今でもスペルが覚えられないような自分でも高得点がとれる。もしスペルミスが加味されていれば確実に赤点である。和歌山で「そろばんができるか」「年号を暗記できるか」で左右されていた「勉強ができる」の概念がイギリスで大きく覆りはじめた。自分は馬鹿ではなく、単に自分の得意が和歌山の基礎教育の方針にそぐわなかっただけなのである。留学してなければこれに気づけずに馬鹿の呪いを自分にかけ続けていたと思うと鳥肌立つし、同時に幼少期にもっと早い段階で別の環境に行っていれば未来はもっと別の形で開いていたかもしれないと小さく後悔する。クリシェを擦るがアインシュタインの言葉に、“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”「誰もが天才だ。しかし魚に木登りをさせて評価すれば、その魚は一生、自分はバカだと思い込んで生きることになる」というのがある。表面的に解釈すると自分にとっての木登りは勉強で水泳がデザインだったわけだが、ちょっと違う。たとえ一見同一のカテゴリの中にもやはり木登りと水泳があるように思う。

I had the opportunity to attend Burberry’s event celebrating International Women’s Day (March 8, today!), where CFO Kate Ferry spoke openly about her career and the challenges she has faced. She shared a story about having breakfast with woman she works with at 7 AM, only to find that she had already gotten a pedicure before arriving at the restaurant. She was overwhelmed by her boundless energy. Kate’s own nails were painted a beautiful red, while I, on the other hand, realised—six months later—that ever since moving, I had completely stopped doing my nails, and I hadn’t even noticed. The version of me who used to walk around Tokyo, diligently getting gel nails, is no longer here. I love how London allows for a relaxed, natural version of myself, where people don’t judge appearances as much. But at the same time, seeing a woman balancing her family life and a CFO role at Burberry—while still keeping up with her nails—is undeniably impressive. Nails exude a sense of composure (whether it’s true or not, the “intention to make time for them” is embodied in that red colour), and that’s inspiring. Spending my days going back and forth between university and home, cutting as many corners as possible when it comes to being “feminine,” is comfortable. But stepping into a world like this, even for a moment, reminds me of certain aspirations I had put on hold but still valued. I’m grateful for this wonderful opportunity. Burberryの国際女性デーを祝すイベントにお邪魔させていただいた。CFOのKate Ferryさんがキャリアやこれまでの葛藤など割と赤裸々に。「仕事仲間と朝7時から朝食をともにした時、相手がすでに朝からペディキュアを済ませてレストランに現れて、無限のエネルギーに圧倒された」と話す彼女のネイルもまた綺麗な赤で、一方わたしは移住してネイルなんてやめてしまったこと、その事実さえもはや認識していなかったことに半年越しに気づく。ジェルネイルにせっせと通いながら東京を闊歩していた私はもういない。見た目に関する自他楽が許されるロンドンや等身大の楽な自分が自然で好き。でも子育てしてネイルしてBurberryのCFOやってる女はかっこいい。爪から余裕（それが事実かは置いといて「ネイルをする余裕を持つ」という赤い意思）が湧き出てかっこいい。女を最大限に手抜きしながら大学と家を往復する日々は楽ですが、時折こういうキラキラの世界に突っ込むと、保留の、でも大事にしてた意思みたいなのを思い出すね。素敵な機会に感謝です。 Thank you! @Burberry

このまえの週末運河沿いをお散歩してるときに、船から上がる煙をもくもく眺めたあたりで謎の多幸感に包まれて、おお、この瞬間以上に欲しいものがもう何もないなと思った。必需品のGRがイギリスの電圧で壊れてしまい、全く使わず眠らせていたSigmaを掘り出したら慣れない動画がたのしかったケンブリッジの記録。必要なものというのはいつも、自分が見積もるよりもうんと少ないですね。 While strolling along the canal the other weekend, I found myself mesmerized by the smoke rising from the boats. At that moment, an inexplicable sense of euphoria washed over me, and I thought—there’s nothing more I could possibly want than this very instant. My essential GR succumbed to the UK’s voltage, leaving it out of commission. So, I unearthed my long-forgotten Sigma, and to my surprise, I found joy in capturing unfamiliar video footage—this is my record of Cambridge. コロンボ市内から南下して、バワの別荘だったルヌガンガでは彼の寝室とギャラリールームに泊まった。途方もないジャングルの中に庭があり、その庭の中にまた小さな庭が区切られて、不思議な心地だったんだけど ”civilised wilderness（文明化された荒野）”の実現を50年模索していたと知ったら納得。 Heading south from Colombo, I stayed in Lunuganga, Bawa’s former villa, spending nights in his bedroom and gallery room. Within the vast jungle, there was a garden, and within that garden, smaller gardens were partitioned off, creating a strange　feeling. When I learned that he had spent 50 years pursuing the concept of a “civilised wilderness,” it all made sense.

スリランカに到着してまず訪れたのがバワの自邸であるNumber 11。10年かけて買いとった４つの小さな家を大胆に繋げた建築は、屋内に郵便ポストの名残があったり、小さな庭が屋外的に点在していたり、内と外が曖昧な都市の秘密のうなぎの寝床のようだった。迷路然とした狭さが返って心地よく、ふと広がった部屋には洞窟の先の秘密基地みたいな安心感あり。 When I arrived in Sri Lanka, the first place I visited was Bawa’s private residence, Number 11. This unique building was created by connecting four small houses he bought over 10 years. Inside, there were traces of an old postbox, and small gardens were scattered like outdoor spaces. It felt like a hidden urban retreat where the boundary between inside and outside was unclear. The narrow, maze-like spaces were somehow comfortable, and the larger rooms that suddenly opened up gave a sense of safety, like a secret hideout beyond a cave. 「僕のまわりの数学者の多くは趣味で何らかの楽器を演奏していて、つまずきがちな物理学者は大抵、哲学をやっていない。」こんな話から、奴隷だった哲学者エピクテトスの「静かに幸せでいるため」の視点について教えてもらう。私の方は、日本の数学者である岡潔の書く文章が如何に美しいのかということや、友人が本を読んでもピンとこなかったという禅についてなど話した。写真は彼から貰った小さな瓶詰めのお茶6つ。好きな人と好きな話ふたり語り合うには充分の超初歩的な英語で構築する最低限のつながりの中で、数えるほどの友人と過ごす小さな午後の愛しさよ。ロンドンいよいよ寒くなってきた。 “Many of the mathematicians around me play some kind of instrument as a hobby, while most of the struggling physicists don’t tend to engage in philosophy.” I spent an afternoon having tea with a university friend, and from this kind of conversation, I learned about the perspective of the slave philosopher Epictetus on “being quietly happy.” On my part, I spoke about how beautifully the Japanese mathematician Kiyoshi Oka writes, and shared some reflections as a Japanese person on Zen, which my friend hadn’t quite grasped despite reading about it. Then, I received six small jars of tea. Spending an afternoon with a few close friends, speaking with just enough super basic English to have a conversation about things we both enjoy, feels so quiet and precious.
