Thank you to everyone who has supported us this far. For this post, I would like to introduce the bear dog, "Nanuq", the only male bear dog working at Picchio. Nanuq came to Picchio along with his sister, Tama, in 2015 after being born a year earlier at the Wind River Bear Institute in Montana, USA. His name means polar bear in Inuktitut, the language spoken where his handler used to live in northern Canada. Nanuq was born bigger than his siblings and so his name represents a hope for him to be tough and strong like the largest of all bears. He lives up to his name when out in the field, pursuing bears with confidence and never tiring. He is intuitive and knows just what to do in different situations. Out of all the bear dogs, he is definitely the quietest and only uses his voice when necessary. Most of the time, his presence alone is enough to keep the bear moving. But despite his sturdy demeanor, Nanuq likes taking it easy on his days off, relaxing in the sunshine and accepting plenty of cuddles (especially in the colder weather). Our bear dog matriarch who came from @windriverbearinstitute as a puppy in 2015! She is a kind and gentle dog, with a bit of a goofy side, especially when there are treats involved. She gave birth to Picchio’s 3rd generation of bear dogs (Rela and Elf) in 2017. The first time Karelian bear dogs were bred in Japan! Now 10 years old, her years of experience as a working bear dog make her very efficient at tracking and chasing bears. She has one of the best senses of smell out of all the dogs and has completed almost 400 chases! Tama may be close to being a grandma but she is still as energetic as ever! Ｗe would once again like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has supported us on this journey so far. For this post, I would like to introduce the bear dog, "Rela", who is the main character of our crowdfunding project and is the future of Picchio's bear countermeasures. Rela was the second puppy to be born in Karuizawa on the 31st of March 2018 out of a litter of six. Her name "Rela'' means "wind'' in the indigenous Ainu language, and honours the work of Carrie Hunt, the founder of the Wind River Bear Institute in the USA. Her name also carries the hope that Rela will be as flexible and fast as the wind. She has a calm personality and loves people. Out of all the siblings, Rela has the largest spread of white fur and is often characterised by her bright, golden eyes. When searching for bears, Rela not only follows their scent along the ground but also checks overhead. It can be tricky to spot bears when they are on the move, especially when they climb up trees. In such cases, Rela's instincts are very good as she can guide her handler safely without losing sight of the bear. Next time, we will introduce Rela's mother, Tama, who was the first bear dog to be successfully bred in Japan!
