Everyday situations that seem to be changing rapidly may actually be shifting so slowly that we remain unaware of them. As an artist, Yuka Nomura has focused on the relationship between human activity and the land, visualizing the fundamental forces at work and the inherent sense of time that runs through both of them through on-site observation and interventions, expressed in the form of sculptures and installations. Her practice, which produces slight shifts within familiar landscapes and presents them as bold installations, works to unsettle and disrupt our perception. For this solo exhibition in Kanazawa, where she spent her university years, Nomura focuses on the activity of gold panning that takes place in the city. Kanazawa's name is said to derive in part from “a valley where gold can be found,” and gold panning has long been practiced in the Saigawa River that flows through the city. Nomura’s new installation, crafted from a variety of light materials, draws inspiration from the scooping and shaking actions of gold panning that Nomura herself experienced while doing research for this work. The works in this exhibition span painting, printmaking, posters, calligraphy, ceramics, video, and installation, and nearly all of them incorporate text. Why does a work make use of text? Why was a particular piece of text chosen? Why is it presented in this form? What effects arise from its presence? Looking at the works from these perspectives opens up new possibilities for interpretation. At the same time, exploring the collection of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa with text as a lens offers a chance to reflect on our own relationship with written language in the age of social media. After graduating from nursing college, TSUNO Seiran worked at a psychiatric hospital while studying fashion design at the fashion school “coconogacco,” founded by YAMAGATA Yoshikazu. Tsuno explains that, as a result of struggling with how to relate to her own body due to her body type, she created “clothes that ignore the body, and detach themselves from it.” While she had her reservations about views of the body that pursue certain norms or standards based on objective metrics, she was drawn to approaches to caregiving that prioritize the subjective narratives of those facing various difficulties. After working as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital, she now worked at Urakawa Bethel House, a community hub for individuals with mental and other health conditions. Tsuno now conducts research on “fat bodies” in graduate school. The reality of bodies that face such challenges is constantly reflected in her clothing designs. Tsuno questions the assumptions inherent in ready-made clothing, such as bodies that fit into sizes like S, M, L, and healthy bodies that can stand and walk. What can clothing do to “be with” bodies that face various challenges? Morimoto chose to study classical painting techniques, and his unique depictions of contemporary urban landscapes leave a strong impression on the viewer. He has a strong interest in how “light,” which has been an important issue in painting since the modern era, is represented, and his depictions of artificial light from street lamps, billboards, and vending machines imbue his paintings with a lyrical atmosphere. Morimoto also creates collages from photographs of people and landscapes that have been taken separately, before proceeding to reconstruct them with paint on the canvas, an approach that confers a kind of anonymity onto these people and landscapes. The spaces and people depicted in these works occupy a kind of boundary between fiction and reality: while it seems as if they might exist everywhere, the reality is that they cannot be found anywhere. Based on the 16th century English composer Thomas Tallis’ The Forty Part Motet (Spem in Alium), this sound installation is a sculptural construction of space in which forty voices from a choir are played through forty speakers. When glass goes beyond the limits of temperature and melts into clay, and analog signals become runaway beasts in closed circuits, materials are transformed from silent supporting characters into protagonists of artistic expression. Artists relinquish their obsession over things being “controllable,” provocatively guiding these materials towards a central role or focus. The theme of “Material Fever” indicates not only the artist’s passion for the material in question, but also the heat that the material itself contains. The visitor to this exhibition will experience not what the artist has created, but rather the process by which the material achieves a seance-like state through the artist. Here, matter is not an object that has been tamed by enlightened reason, but rather a form of subjectivity with the power to resist and negotiate, constructing a wild, symbiotic world together with humans.
