When I give lectures about the ryūteki, I often describe its sound as a mix of “pure tone” and “noise.” But to be honest… is that really accurate? [What is the Hichiriki?] Beyond Duality — Music Where Laughter and Sublimity Coexist This episode includes a story from when I was working on a soundtrack. When we played the sound of the hichiriki in a foreign studio, half the staff laughed and said, “What is this?” The other half responded, “This is a sacred sound.” Exactly the same tone, yet completely opposite reactions. This radio episode explores the story behind that experience. ■ Japanese culture contains worlds that can't be explained by simple oppositions like “good and evil,” “ridiculous and sacred,” or “love and hate.” To me, the hichiriki embodies this complexity. It’s a world that transcends mere duality. ■ Also, the yoshi reed from Takatsuki—essential for crafting hichiriki reeds—is now facing extinction. Also, the performance includes some big mistakes—please forgive me! 😅 Living in the forests of Nasu, I realized something: The world is full of rich and beautiful sounds. When creating this piece, I wanted it to exist without disturbing that richness. But as I kept composing, I began to notice something else. Maybe the same is true in cities. Because the hearts of people living in urban environments are also part of “nature.” And within them, there’s something like a quiet wind or a gentle light flowing. Just as we try to respect “nature,” I believe we should also avoid over-controlling the “human heart.” I want to create music that gently accompanies that inner landscape. Taishikichō is one of the modal systems of Tōgaku, music that was introduced from China during the Nara to early Heian period. Its tonal center corresponds roughly to an E in Western music. In this piece, I combined traditional Japanese instruments (shō, hichiriki, ryūteki, biwa, etc.) with Western classical instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and piano. The structure of the original is kept intact. Each instrument enters one by one, as in the traditional format—creating a quiet encounter between two parallel sound worlds. Gagaku and Classical music. Sound as phenomenon, and sound as emotion.
