鮨屋では「イシガキガイ」と呼ばれており、「石垣貝」と表記されているところもあります。魚河岸で「カゲ」を「ガキ」と間違えたのが原因であるといわれています。鳥貝と同じザルガイ科で、色は違っていても、足の形や肉質は鳥貝に似ています。はじめは鳥貝の代用品として出回っていましたが、現在では市民権を得れるようになりました。殻長、殻高共に7〜8cmになります。殻表には四十本くらいの丸みのある放射状のうねが走っており、鳥貝よりも厚く、足は白っぽいです。
