The theme of our fifth presentation was "Woven Strata." Formed through long processes of sedimentation, compression, and uplift, geological strata reveal cross-sections marked by uneven surfaces, granular textures, mineral flecks that shimmer in shifting light, and the rough, cracked surfaces of dried earthen walls. In this exhibition, Kawashima Selkon Textiles reinterprets these diverse textures shaped by natural processes of sedimentation through highly advanced textile techniques, refined over many years. A wide spectrum of textile expressions comes together within a single space, ranging from powerful Tsuzureori tapestry artworks handwoven on giant looms by master artisans to practical machine-woven works that pursue materially authentic surface qualities. Art direction by lighting designer Izumi Okayasu brought the textiles to life through a presentation that invited visitors to experience how textile surfaces shift and transform according to angle of light and viewing distance. The exhibition welcomed architects, interior designers, and design professionals from around the world, offering a meaningful opportunity to share the possibilities of texture expression through weaving and the breadth of our technical repertoire. In this exhibition, Kawashima Selkon Textiles reinterprets these diverse textures shaped by nature's process of sedimentation through highly advanced textile techniques refined over many decades. A wide spectrum of textile expressions comes together within a single space, ranging from powerful Tsuzure-ori tapestry artworks handwoven on giant looms by master artisans to pieces incorporating silk and gold threads, mother-of-pearl, and film, as well as practical machine-woven works that pursue materially authentic surface qualities.
