However, by using glass-specific lacquer or bonding agents and sanding the surfaces, it is possible to increase adhesion. Even so, complete adhesion is difficult, so in some cases I combine kintsugi with glass-specific adhesives. For this piece, I used epoxy resin for bonding. The subsequent steps were carried out in the same way as traditional kintsugi. Gold leaf was applied to the exposed edges. Since the glass was thick, you can enjoy subtle changes in color depending on the viewing angle. I hesitated at first, but every wooden object once stood rooted in the earth. I decided to follow how this tree would be reborn. March – Sawing and Drying At the sawmill, careful kitori (planning how to cut) turned the log into lumber. The wood was kiln-dried before use. April – Charred Piles for the Foundation We made piles from larch, stripping the bark and charring the surface to protect them. With everyone’s help, we set them in the ground and leveled them for the base. April–June – A Cabin Appears Bit by bit, the cabin took shape. What was once just an idea became real. With the help of many hands, one tree was reborn as a small cabin. Unlike small chips, which can often still be used, most broken vessels are either thrown away or stored away, hidden but never forgotten. Sometimes people bring me pieces they couldn’t part with for many years. When I receive such vessels, I feel a deep joy in being able to help. Almost any broken piece can be restored with kintsugi. (Please note: items used over direct fire cannot be repaired due to the nature of lacquer.) You are welcome to request an estimate and then decide at your own pace. While a chipped cup or bowl can still be used, the part that touches the lips often feels uncomfortable. The first piece I ever had repaired was also a small rim chip. Seeing it beautifully restored with gold became the inspiration for my work today. I’m happy to share that the space is now complete, and I’d love to invite you to an open house. The atelier was built using a single large red pine tree that once stood on the site. The tree was felled, milled, dried, and processed—then used almost entirely to create the structure. Using locally sourced materials like this contributes to reducing environmental impact, revitalizing regional economies, and preserving local culture. Feel free to drop your questions in the comments! #アトリエ #地域材2025/07/01に公開- 指定なしhttps://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/アトリエ#アトリエhttps://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/地域材#地域材0.0%-1▶ 詳しいやり方はこちらから ↓ ▷Step-by-step guide below ⇩ －ガラスの金継ぎ－ ① 割れた断面にエポキシ接着剤を塗り、接着。 マスキングテープで固定して硬化を待ちます。 ② 硬化後、はみ出た接着剤をカッターで丁寧に削り取ります。 ③ 欠けた部分に金箔を貼って、装飾の下準備を。 ④ 欠けを補うように、エポキシパテを充填。 形を整えながら成形します。 ⑤ 硬化したら、パテの余分な部分を削り取ります。 ⑥ 成形したパテの表面に、生漆を塗って地固めをします。 ⑦ 硬化後、やすりで整え、割れと欠けのラインに白漆を塗布。 ⑧ 硬化後、やすりで整え、もう一度白漆を塗ります。 （この工程を2回繰り返します） ⑨ 最終に仕上げとして、白漆を漉してから塗り、金箔を 蒔きます。 ⑩ 真綿でやさしく磨き、しっかりと乾かしたら完成です。 ※今回は、接着に黄変しにくいエポキシ樹脂を使用しました。 - Glass on Kintsugi Process: ① Apply epoxy adhesive to the broken edges, join the pieces, and secure them with masking tape. ② Once the resin cures, trim off any excess with a cutter. ③ Apply gold leaf to the chipped area as a decorative base. ④ Fill the chipped area with epoxy putty, shaping it carefully. ⑤ After curing, shave off the excess putty to refine the shape. ⑥ Apply raw urushi lacquer to the putty to seal and prime the surface. ⑦ Coat the cracked and chipped areas with white urushi lacquer. ⑧ After drying, sand the surface and apply a second layer of white lacquer.(This step is repeated twice.) ⑨ Once dry, strain the white lacquer and apply a final coat. The bold line running through it felt as if it carried its own will. For some reason, I was deeply drawn to it, and ever since, I’ve wanted to try a repair like that myself. Last year, I was entrusted with a cylindrical bowl that had cracked during shipping— a clean break, right through the center. I pictured a strong silver line running through it, and thought it would look bold and beautiful. Something told me that the person who requested this repair would embrace such a distinctive kintsugi style. Today, I had the chance to meet her in person and hand it over directly.
