Its a holiday today in Saitama To celebrate as Saitama Prefecture PR Ambassador let's visit a family business that does indigo Aizome dyeing. Nogawa Senshoku Kougyou has been running for about 110 years. I met with the 5th generation head: Yuki Nogawa san and he generously showed me around his families historic facilities. Bushu sho aizome is a traditional textile dyeing technique from Saitama. A konya 紺屋 is an indigo shop/ dyeing shop and an 藍師 aishi is a master indigo dyer. Historically aizome garments and textiles were used and worn by the aristocracy and samurai. Over time becaming accessible to all levels of society. The colour fades relatively slowly and it adds an extra dimension of functionality and durability. Because of this indigo was widely used as a dye for hemp, cotton and linen work clothes and farm clothes during the Edo to Meiji periods. Dyeing with aizome tightens and strengthens fibers, adds insect repelling and deodorising effects, antiseptic qualities said to aid in stopping the spread of skin rashes. Both functional and beautiful. Used in garments underneath samurai armour and also in the lacing for armour, Dark kachi iro was great at hiding stains and maintaining the appearance of the samurai for longer. 📌Chest protector for kyudo: The mune ate 胸当 I often get questions about my muneate. What is it? Why do you wear it? Where can I get one like yours? In kyudo, the string touches our chest in full draw and the muneate provides a surface for the string to pass over without catching on our uniforms. People who do recurve archery also use a similar type of protector. 📌I have found the hakkaku 八角胸当 type of muneate suits me best and doesn't move around or get in the way of the string. Happy Friday everyone🫶 📌Do you have summer and winter yumi?弓の使い分け *2nd day on a different bow I plan to use over winter. Not very used to it yet🫣 In my dojo some sempai use a bamboo bow (take yumi 竹弓) for some parts of their practice and a carbon yumi for others. Separating the bow they use depending on the purpose it will be used for(exam/competition/practice). Sempai also often have 2 to 4 yumi. 1 for spring/summer and 1 for autumn/winter and sometimes a backup of each = 4 Over winter here in Japan, it is freezing and very dry. Oftentimes bamboo bows become stronger due to a lack of humidity combined with very low temperatures so people tend to purchase s slightly lower draw weight as mid-winter it shoots the same as their regular draw weight. Summer with high humidity(depending on the region) can cause bamboo bows to lose draw strength (depending on the bow) so people tend to purchase at a slightly higher draw weight and come summer it feels like their regular draw weight. *Not a samurai baseball bat🤭 The kanabo, tetsubo(kanasaibo金砕棒) or two handed war club I had heard about kanasaibo金砕棒 here and there but had not had the opportunity to hold or inspect one close up. Visiting the Yoroi Workshop in Warabi I had the chance to hold one. As you'd imagine it was very solid and took some momentum to swing. The metal and wood design was quite interesting with shapes and studs along the top part of the club. Andy has more info on this particular kanasaibo if you are interested. 🔹Kanasaibo 📌Basics Length: said to be between 150cm to 360 cm (1 jo 2 shaku). Thickness: 3.5 to 4 cm and 7 cm at the tip. Weight:3~6 kg. Materials: iron, oak and boxwood 📌Use Held with both hands, swung around, slammed down to crush armour, doors etc Often used in melee battles, it's suggested that it was an anti-cavalry weapon; though finding actual evidence has been difficult. Depictions in certain works of Japanese art show longer war clubs being used while on horseback to strike or thrust the enemy. 📌History Though there was some suggestion that kanasaibo was used earlier (Benke) the design we see most often was likely produced during the 1300s. 📌Design Earlier versions were said to be wooden, cut into a hexagonal or octagonal shape, with sharpened corners to increase the impact of the striking surface. Later wood/metal composite war clubs were used with reinforced iron plates, spikes and studs attached; this also increased overall weight with the addition of metal. Fully iron kanasaibo appeared towards the end of the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392) were said to be around 150cm, weighing around 5kg 📌Kanasaibojutsu? It is noted that similar to Japanese battle axes there does not appear to be a specific martial art that specialised in war clubs. However, depending on the scenario, bojutsu, kenjutsu and juttejutsu techniques may have been applied. Riding through susuki 芒(pampas grass) in armour with the autumn breeze blowing was an amazing feeling. Susuki is synonymous with aki秋 autumn and is a symbol of the autumn harvest, fertility and as a talisman to ward off evil spirits and misfortune. It is often featured in haiku when expressing autumn and in woodblock prints called ukiyoe 浮世絵 Riding on horseback in oyoroi was wonderful and riding through the susuki was really beautiful. You can see my arm outstretched in the video as I couldn't help myself. 📌Happy Friday everyone! Today my dojo in Urawa was closed so I visited this cosy kyudojo in Toda City, Saitama. When visiting a dojo as an outsider I liken it to visiting someone's home here in Japan. Even though it is a public facility open to anyone with shodan more often than not there are members present who have practiced there for years and an unspoken standard operating procedure for things like arrow retrieval and ceremonial shooting. Even though we are all kyudo practitioners I've found that each dojo does things in their own way, order, speed, frequency etc What's normal in your dojo may be slightly different somewhere else. I've found observing others and asking if I'm not sure is the best way to go. Happy Tuesday🫶 Recently I received some bougu防具 or protective armour for naginata. I was considering purchasing my own but feel very luckynto recurve a sempais set of suneate脛当 or shin protection and kote小手 or hand/forearm protection. Ive been learning the correct body position and posture, the correct order everything must be worn and how to put it on. I'm still very slow but having my own bougu is really exciting. The suneate are traditionally indigo dyed (aizome) which is really nice.The kote are deer skin. Happy Saturday!🪓 Have you tried axe throwing? 斧投げやってみた！ It's still relatively minor in Japan but I managed to find a place to try axe throwing in Asakasa, Tokyo. 海外では人気な競技や趣味です。ずっと前からやってみたかった。日本で体験できる場がまだ少ないようです。 I had a lesson and a debrief about safety and leant that competitive throwing axes aren't like regular axes either! 投げ方、ルール、自己注意の説明しっかり受けました。投斧、投げる専用な斧を使ってます。的を向かって斧投げます。当たった場所により点数取れます。 There were 6 lanes and all had wood from top of the target to the floor plus a generous amount of woodchips on the ground to catch the impact of a falling axe. 6レーン(投げるブース)がありました。的が木造でできて的下も木造、的の前がウッドチップになってます。斧が刺されない場合、ウッドチップの上まで落ちます。レーンの横に壁があって一人で仕様できます。 I learnt to throw one handed from my shoulder this time round. It took about 4 or 5 times before I started hitting but once I started, it was so much fun. お店のスタッフが片手で肩からの投げ方教えてもらいました。的に当たるまで4,5回くらいかかりましたが、当たり始まるととっても楽しかった✨️ There were many parallels for me with kyudo. The height that you hold the axe handle, the angle of your elbow as you throw, your body, the amount of force you use, the height you let go at etc changes the flight of the axe dramatically. 投げながら弓道との共通点は感じました。斧のハンドルの持ち手高さによって、飛びが変わりますし、投げる腕の肘の角度や体の角度、投げる力加による飛び変わります。こういったところがとても面白く感じました。 A big difference for me was body usage. I stand left side towards the target for hours every day in kyudo and to stand straight on to a target and throw was a little bit unnatural but I got used to it! 📌Yumi and kabuto兜 the samurai helmet (Trying something different) The same day as I strung and shot the antique urushi nuri yumi we had a couple of minutes left so I tried a couple of arrows wearing a kabuto. Ideally, I would be crouched but I just wanted to get a feel for what sort of body movement would be necessary to shoot an arrow. 📌Bow fiberglass around 10kg 📌Arrows soya maybe 1913 shafts 📌Distance 28m target 36cm across The fukugaeshi 吹返 the curved part around the head at eye line acts in part as a shield from enemy arrows and swords as does the shikoro錣 or the neck protection. Depending on the kabuto they jut out a lot necessitating a shorter draw. But what kind of draw? *No kataboshi yugake I made the mistake of wearing mine out of habit. * draw using a variation of shamen and without high uchiokoshi (made that mistake too here) *setting lower and shorter depending on the armour but around the corner of the mouth? This video is about a year old now but was one of the first times I tried wearing a kabuto. 📌how strong is your bow?🤔 About 1 week ago I moved up in draw weight. It wasn't something I anticipated or expected but I was excited to face the challenge. Many people ask 📌What draw weights are yumi? 📌They are anywhere between 6kg and over 50kg. Anywhere over about 25~30kg will be a handmade (takes months/years) bamboo yumi made by a yumishi. Draw lengths are over 80cm and sometimes up to or slightly over 100cm. So to compare them kg to kg to a recurve or compound is a bit difficult. Strong yumi are not impossible to get hold of but they are relatively more expensive than off the rack yumi at a kyudo shop in Japan. There are yumishi who speak English here in Japan. There are several Japan trained yumishi living overseas who specialise in strong yumi. But dont forget your arrows and yugake. Strong bows require appropriate arrows and a well made kyudo glove. Me, well I am finding my right arm is more muscular than my left which is honestly a problem. Overall balance between both sides of the body and the left side is very important. 📌antique bow test An urushi lacquer yumi: 漆塗弓 urushi nuriyumi was brought to me by my friend in Saitama. Traditional armourer Andrew Mancabelli. Traditional/antique yumi are very often nibe にべ yumi meaning the adhesive is traditionally made from a fish called a nibe and in other cases: deerskin. The yumi wasn't waterproof/rainproof and the adhesive would come apart in high humidity making it unusable outdoors on battlefields in the rain and in the humid summer weather. The nuri yumi, however, was highly moisture and humidity resistant and provided protection for the natural materials of the yumi itself. The urushi nuriyumi was made by filing down the nodes of the bamboo then wrapping a string around the length of the bow and coating it in urushi lacquer. Black and red are standard colours for nuri yumi and antique bows are often found in these colours. But I managed to string it! Because of the lacquer coating I couldn't see the actual bow and couldn't determine if it had cracks or breaks inside.I wasn't sure whether I could even string it let alone shoot it.. So I tried stringing the bow it felt very strong and I strung it🤩after letting it rest a moment I tried shooting it and it shot pretty well but it was strong. I think between 15 and 16kg. The bow had no bow makers signature but was estimated at Edo Period by Andrew. Kyudo in the rain is quite magical☂️ The sound of the rain while I practice is a wonderful respite from this summer heat. 📌Shakai 射会 kyudo competition Yesterday we held a competition at the kyudo group I help to run. I did pretty bad and ended up placing 6th🫠 A shakai is a friendly competition where more hits wins. The winner (a seasoned practitioner) got 11 hits of 16 arrows. We entered in teams of 3 people decided on the day and shot 4 sets of 4 arrows. In between each set we would rotate and record hits/collect and clean arrows/ and prepare for our next set. Having a time limit,and having pressure to hit as much as possible was quite a different environment to what I was used to. It was a learning experience🤭 There were 6 targets instead of the usual 5 so figuring out where to stand exactly was a little tricky 🤭 My form wasn't good yesterday and part of that maybe was nerves. 📌Kaizen 改善 and happy news One of my aims as a kyudo practitioner is kaizen, or the aim of continuous self improvement. 1% better everyday!弓引きとして個人的に「改善」を心持ちしてます。 It has taken about 2 years but I recently received permission to grade again. I'm not sure when I will go to shinsa/grading but getting to hear those words is enough for now at least. I feel like celebrating a little. Through my keiko I aim for small ongoing positive changes. 現在、Kaizenという言葉がビジネス業界では世界中流行してます。個人的に自分が考えてる改善が「進歩を目指す」に近い意味合い。 The reason for the improvement, is continued consistent practice and a mindset called kaizen. It can be translated directly as good change or improvement. Kai 改 means change or to correct and zen 善 which means good. I think that big results come from the accumulation of many small changes, or many small actions, done consistently over time. 長細く、引き続けて、1％でも進歩を目指して、お稽古してます。長い目でみると変わったことがわかります😃 Having this mindset in my budo practice has lead to positive changes in my work and private life too.改善を生き方として取り組んで、お稽古でも日常生活に良い影響あります。 Eliminating excess and refining my movements and kata in kyudo is also part of kaizen.
